Penn Battle II Reel Review: UPDATE IN OP!

Any of you folks have any experience with this reel? What's your opinions? Gonna be used fishing for trout and reds.
UPDATE: So I bought the 4000 Penn Battle II and it appears to be real nice. Hoping to test it out on the water tomorrow. The only potential problem I have is the reel doesn't "lock" when you try to reel backwards. I don't know if it's suppose to do this or not. When I try to reel backwards it just loosens the reel handle.

It's my go to reel. I own 5 and will add a 6th next time they go on sale (which is often). Nothing bad to say. Recently I started buying the entire combos. It's a very nice combo for the money.
I like the 2000 and 3000 with braid. The 4000 is too large for me in a kayak. I've wrestled some bulls in a bay boat as well on 2000 and 3000.

When you say they go on sale ... how much does an on-sale combo run? I might go with a 3000 since I also fish braid. I'm looking at a price of $130 for a combo right now.

I have caught 1000's of fish on my 2000 with 15lb Braid. It's my favorite reel. I have it on a 6'6 falcon boo cu rod. Perfect match. I caught a 25 lb red on it a month ago and that little reel kicked its arse. Mostly fish specks and will outcast everyone. Great for bass and a spinner bait.
There $75 on amazon.

Don't waist your money on the combo. The reels are great but the rods that come with them are trash.

I disagree completely. The price distance for reel only and combo is $20-$30... it is a hell of a rod for $30. They are well balanced to the reel. My only negative is that I do not prefer full cork handle. I do have some Battles on $150 rods that I prefer... but I will probably never do another setup like that until I break a combo's rod.

West Marine and Academy run most frequent sales. The $130 regardless price is usually $100-$120. Sometimes Academy f's up and you can get combo for $80. The only way to really know is to go in store, find a combo, and price check at a scanner.
BTW- Academy seems to do this across the board. Last week I picked up $50 and $60 Columbia PFG gear on their regular racks for $9 and $14 each. They seem to have a pretty glitchy system.

Disagree. The combos are legit

I bought the 130.00 PFG's in Florida last week for 25.00 Freaking ridiculous

We sell a lot of the combos. Seems to be a pretty solid set-up.

I'm leaning toward getting the combo and just upgrading the rod down the line if I don't like it. I, too, am a fan of cork handles.
ETA: Thanks for everyone's feedback.

Rods are ok, but they are on the heavy/ bulky side

People love to buy cheap crap. OP, do yourself a favor. Go buy yourself a Symetre.
SHIMANO>PENN

This. I own a Symetre and a Battle II and I'll choose the Symetre every single time. Much smoother, further cast and all around better in my opinion. I like my battle, but I love my Symetre.

Have you owned that model Penn? neither is cheap. But would put money on the penn battle outlasting that shimano.

Nope. Never owned one. Never had a reason to buy anything else than shimano. I have a Symetre that is 15 years old and will still catch fish. Not as smooth as it once was, or as pretty, but it still works great. I'll take that any day.

your mileage may vary but I know two people who have broken their rods they came with.
I guess let me rephrase.....buy the combo, but be prepared to put it on a nicer rod one day.

You've never owned one, but know it's better? Come on now Dave
For the money, the battles are tough to beat. I use and abuse them from the kayak. Had a 6000 that I used for tarpon and big jacks down in Miami. Only one that ever gave me a problem was the one that I dropped over the side of the yak
