So far, Round Rock Texas is up there.

California is not a great place to raise children.

I could see myself raising kids in Arcata or Eureka.

The school systems aren't great, work options are underpaid, property values are still high and taxes will cripple you. Other than being the emerald triangle what does that area offer? And really what does it offer a 6 year old?

I plan to homeschool my (unlikely) children until 12 or 13, and if I lived out there, it's because I'm not having to worry about money.
I would just want my kids to grow up in an area with plenty to do outdoors.

Have you been there?
Yes, I worked at a farm in Fernwood for 8 months....about 7 years ago.

Nashville
My wife and I have been discussing Nashville. Her brother just moved there a year or so ago, and her family is from VA so it would group us up for their side to visit.
Most notably you can buy a god damn castle of a house there between 4 to 600k. Not so much in the good parts Orleans parish and I'm not too excited about the alternatives around here.
No state income taxes, better schools, less insurance, and the property tax didn't seem out of line either.

Uh. Folsom, CA is pretty great. People seem to enjoy living there, the schools are good, it is safe, lots of interesting outdoors options, access to transit, etc. Probably no more expensive than Austin.

Depending on where you are it's still a great place to grow up.

I know my kid loves Round Rock and the neighbor kids seem to as well. Our school is in our neighborhood and I can actually send him to it. We have bike trails all around, every youth sports imaginable, parks with splash pads, etc. Maybe not the best place but it's a pretty darn good place to raise a kid.
