They really see these sites as places that can be used to worship idols so they must be destroyed, even if the temple is dedicated to an ancient Mesopotamian religion and has not been used since ancient times.
Read about what happened in Saudi Arabia when the Wahhabis took over. They dgaf about early Islamic holy sites. They very nearly demolished the tomb of Muhammad himself. They've demolished I think every grave of Muhammad's family and places where he lived.

If a religion tells it's followers to do things, they will do them. Some will take those instructions or interpretations to extremes.
