It's only for the first $2500. I'm not sure if the business has to participate but at the end of the year they wouldn't pay the tax to the state and would pocket what you should have saved.
Not an accountant.

State tax (4%) with a $2500 max. You do the math. It's a joke but people go ape shite crazy.

It's pretty much an excuse for idiots to go spend way more money than they have on something that companies laugh all the way to the bank about.

If you make a purchase, the first 2500 of it is not taxable.

They have one called sportmans tax free weekend or some shite that saves you 10%. I believe it's the first weekend of September. I'm planting the seeds of a new gun safe right now. My wife of course opposes armed with the facts that we don't have the money or room for a new gun safe. But I dangle the $150+ we could save over her head like one would do a piece of meat over a lions, trying to appeal to her inner goofyass woman shopper syndrome. I've seen her buy some expensive worthless items because they were on sale. Should be interesting.

As others have said, there's a cap placed on what's tax free.
If you are already in the market for something, it might be a good idea to shop and spend this weekend...many box stores will add in deals in addition to the tax free weekend to make it more lucrative.
However too many people buy just because they can't pass up a deal.
I can't tell you how many times I've heard, "I can't afford not to buy it." But it was a luxury item and they really couldn't afford it. Just can't pass up a sale...

You don't have to pay the state tax which is 4%. That's $100

And I'm laughing because I know this shite works, despite how ridiculous it sounds.
