Kevin Steele & O making Turnovers a Priority

Steele and Orgeron have been working with the whole defense on stripping the ball more then anything else. Orgeron said he wants to get back to being a ferocious Defense

Having a real DC and a real DL coach is amazing. So versatile and focused.

Totally disagree, if you play "containment" D (to include never never never ever rushing the passer) everything will be ok. We don't need (quotation mark fingers) turnovers!

There's a video of Les talking about it, too. Talks about Honey Badger. I'm eating this stuff up.

They should be making firing off the ball and Getting penetration the priority. Also getting off blocks. Stripping the ball should be the #4 priority

What these guys have done is nothing short of amazing up until this point. Coach O has the resume to say he is a better DL coach than Haley on the college level IMO. But, calling Steele a real DC over Chavis sounds ridiculous at this point. Steele is going to pay big dividends on the recruiting trail, but he will have to prove himself as a DC IMO. Obviously he will have the talent, so he needs to produce. I honestly think us winning a national title in the next 3 or 4 years will be hinged upon whether or not he can be a great DC.

Don't worry brother, go back and watch O's front 7 on D at USC, they get up the field first, I'm excited.

Thanks for the input, coach.
LOL at how much everyone is looking into practice clips. Can't wait for this season to finally start.

O was working with the DBs and LBs

He's been much better at teaching our position groups and being more active in practices. Chavis would sit in a corner and yell at people. Steele is working with the DL, LBs, and DBs, all while he creates gameplans for future opponents.

Man I wish I could dig up miles quote about the complainers in our fan base.
You'd complain about a glass of water on a deserted island because it want cold enough.

I have mixed feeling about that, it can lead to poor tackling. You need turnovers but don't sacrifice leverage and technique. That is how the Saints D was under the bounty hunter.

You do realize they will be playing in about 4 weeks. This is the time to emphasize turnovers. Coach O has already been working on getting off blocks along with the other hand drills they've run. You've seen some of them in camp videos. They know what they're doing.

Then don't. What do you do after you've fired off the ball, used your technique and hands, but can't quite get to the QB to make the tackle? Anyone can answer?

Chavis won a National Title at UT and was the main reason they won it. In 2011 LSU had one of the best teams of all time and it was again mainly due to Chavis' defense. So say what you want about the guy, but he has proven himself a lot more as a DC than Steele has up until now. Now I'm not saying Steele won't be as good, this will be his first time driving a Cadillac so to speak.... so who knows? Hopefully with everything he will have at his disposal, LSU will have FILTHY defenses for years to come! But he has not proven anything yet.

For anyone who has issues with this, go check our FBS ranking last year in turnovers. /thread

One thing about Shavis and those two great defenses. Go back and look at the talent on those two particular teams. Yes, he did great things with them. However, that's what it requires for him to have a great, well balanced defense. When he didn't have that talent or experience level, you can start to get down into the statistics and see weaknesses, like his last two LSU defenses.

I think the whole "making turnovers a priority" is ridiculous statement. Every defense wants to create TOs. But TOs happen when defensive players are in the right place at the right time. If the coaching staff can put these guys in the right spot and the players a smart enough to get to the right spot on time, then TOs will happen on their own. Mathieu was so special because he was only guy I can remember at LSU that could create TOs on his own. That is a RARE talent and the exception, not the rule.
Force the QB to git rid of the ball early and be in the right spot. Turnovers will happen

Well, I guess Pelini can sit pretty because he has done the same. The reason it happened it 2011 was because of Mingo, Montgomery, Reid, Mathieu, Claiborne, etc. It was the best assembly of talent running the same scheme that was run in 2012, 2013, and 2014. Same at UT. Chavis was a great DC, but so was Pelini who finished higher on average all three years that he coached here. Continuity is what we're aiming for. The push by the players is for this season. The push by the coaches is for the foreseeable future of the program and you've got to get the best out of each and every class to get there.
