I want to try a Fallout game on the PC, should I get 3 or New Vegas?

To put it simply, which is a better Fallout game? Take into account mods for PC when answering.

Fallout 3. Capital Wasteland >>> Boring-arse desert. Gameplay isn't that different, especially given their ages at this point, and FO3 has some amazing mods to update it as well. It's an entirely more atmospheric, fascinating world to explore.
To this day, my memories of originally playing through Fallout 3 are so vivid that it almost feels like the Capital Wasteland is a real place that I went and visited.
I put such an emphasis on atmosphere because, let's face it, neither game is going to pull you in because of a strong plot, well-developed characters, or amazing game play. That's the downside to open-world games. With that said, I do prefer the story, characters, and quests in FO3 to New Vegas as well.

Fallout 3 is TES:Oblivion in the post-apocalyptic future
Fallout: NV is a first person Fallout experience

The writing, the setting, the atmosphere.
I have said for a long time that New Vegas felt like a Fallout title, F3 does not in any way.
ETA: Not that I'm saying Fallout 3 is a bad game. Even as The Elder Scrolls: Washington DC, it's a fun game

Interesting. Not disagreeing with you because I'm not super deep into the lore and history of the game. I liked 3 better, but other than some basic mechanics and the way they handled companions, NV pretty much seemed like the same game in a different setting.
ETA OK, you were kind of knocking FO3 as well. Like I said in the other thread, I wish I could get into those older games to get a feel of where this series started, but it's just not possible.

Play through Fallout 3 first. If you have fun, play New Vegas later

They're both great games. I prefer Fallout 3 but one thing I do like about New Vegas is there are no underground tunnels you have to go through to access certain areas of the map.

I liked Fallout 3 a lot, and played the hell out of it. But I loved NV. The story was much better, though I wish they had been able to flesh out the process of going with the slavers better. I also liked the setting better than Fallout 3, but that's just a matter of taste.

I bought both after Fallout 4 was announced. I had never played a Fallout game but decided to after I read up on the lore. Fallout 3 is a great game but I have played and enjoyed New Vegas WAY more. It's more open and you have more interactions with factions in it. I'd say get New Vegas

Eh. I disagree. There are a few story lines in New Vegas that have sucked me in and made me care about the people involved. The ghouls trying to escape to their paradise was a great storyline. I also love the Boomers. Even when I do an evil playthrough, I don't think I'll be able to do anything bad to them.

FO3 was a very memorable game, awesome setting and gameplay. Have had NV on backlog and just started it yesterday, with mods and everything it definitely holds up, it looks great. NV has some new features that FO3 didnt have like weapon mods and companions.
TL/DR: Both are great

Basically this. It really depends on what you enjoy in your games. Fallout NV is closer to Fallout 1 and 2 in style.
Both are very good games though. F3 probably has more straight up wow moments and feels a bit larger, but many of the places are recycled much like the Elder Scrolls games. It also doesn't give you as much choice long term in the game, which kinda goes against the Fallout premise.
NV has better individual quests IMO, and is a better game overall. But I much prefer the gameplay of the older Fallout games to Bethesda games, even though I enjoy both.

I see claiming better gameplay on both sides. From what little I did play of FO3 on 360, I do remember it getting a little dull, but my gaming taste has changed since then. That was also a time where I didn't particularly like Skyrim because I wanted my RPG's to be cinematic like the BioWare games. Now I'm still playing Skyrim to this day and haven't touched Mass Effect or Dragon Age in a while. That being said, I ran into the issue of pretty much just not caring what happened on Fo3 and I ended up not continuing the playthrough because of it. Does NV have a more interesting concept?

I think New Vegas has a much better main story line. It takes longer to get going (FO3 starts off interesting with that Nuke Town), but once you get to Vegas and start dealing with all of the factions, it's much more interesting than the main story of FO3. It has more dark humor than 3, which I love.

Everything Tom said. 3 was extremely memorable, and I can hardly remember a thing from NV

I think so, I'd agree with what Thrillho said above me. NV has a much better sense of humor, and you deal with much more interesting factions and quests.
One of my largest issues with F3 was you spend too much time running around in the same places for 75% of the game (those damn underground tunnels in F3 are boring as hell to me). NV has a much larger variety of places (and enemies) you are visiting. Also on a random side note, the Old World Blues DLC for NV is awesome and worth the price of admission all by itself.
