Bolt's best 400m time is 45.28 from 2007. Johnson's time is 43.18. I think he could've given it a good run, but I don't know if he takes it down
I think he might have.

lolz.
wooden rackets versus today's composites.
Oh, some people are playing with wooden racquets while others are playing with modern racquets?
Oh no, that isn't true at all. Carry on.

Yet even these measurement difficulties pale in comparison with those in interactive sports, in which opponents affect each other.

I find it amazing that Kevin Young's WR set in the Olympics (400 hurdles) and Team USA's WR in 4x400 relay set in the WC, Michael Johnson's WR set in the World's (400) haven't been approached yet.
FloJo's 100m hasn't even been sniffed.

The limits have more to do with just what kind of forces the body can withstand.
As in, you could never throw a baseball 120mph because to attain that kind of rotational force would result in all the tendons (or is it ligaments?) in your shoulder ripping in half.
With sprinters, they're getting dangerously close to subjecting their feet to greater impacts than they're built to withstand.

The fact that Bolt is probably past his prime already at age 26 is consistent with what I've always thought -- that he's completely clean. Which is remarkable, if true (and, again, I've always suspected that it is true), because I doubt his competition is clean.
he was just designed for sprinting.

You don't buy the argument that technology is a moot issue since the players play against each other and with equal equipment?
Greatness is greatness within a generation, but I'm just saying it's hard to compare a guy like Laver to the modern game. Most reasonable people would probably agree Mac had some of the best hands ever seen. But, could Mac growing up now even compete in today's game? I just feel like he couldn't, although IMO Borg or Lendl probably would. I know you will say this is full retard, but I have doubts Nadal would have had half the success he did without poly strings. Maybe he just ends up as Vilas or Muster. Then, there is surface stuff. The tour used to have a decent amount of fast carpet. It doesn't exist now. Anyway, enough tennis rambling.
I would like to hear from some of the distance running dorks. I thought there has been a flurry of high school kids hitting 4:00 miles lately. Or, that masses of women are quickly advancing their marathon times (I think Grantland had something) and doing some remarkable things at ultra distance running.

Did two people in here claim it is Bolts starts that make him so good?

I saw one, but that was bad enough.

I won't do that, but I will ask you why you think that.
More specifically, I'll ask why you question whether Nadal would have had success when Borg had as much success as he did. I'm certain I've said this before on here, but I think Nadal is basically Borg 2.0.

I'd chalk it up to better, smarter training. I can see how sports/events that require a great deal of endurance or a great deal of skill will progress for a longer period of time than sports/events where its just about pure speed or pure strength.

Wariner ran a 1:53 800 that is just insane.
How is that insane? That isn't very fast at all.

I think there are 2 separate arguments, and the problems arises when people try to mix them. Theres a difference between saying "MJ is greater than LBJ" and "MJ would be better than LBJ if he were in his prime in today's NBA"
