Both BR guys at Catholic High and LSU missed on them. I know LSU wasn't the school to be at at this time and FSU was hot.
Did they even consider LSU? Did FSU have some ties at Catholic High at that time? Just curious what went on with their recruitment.

Well in the case of Warrick Dunn it was a matter of Bobby Bowden or Curley Hallman. Probably wasn't a tough choice.

In Warrick case the murder of his mother, Betty Smothers, was a MAJOR factor in him leaving Baton Rouge.

Minor followed Warrick cue to leave Baton Rouge.

I'm pretty sure with what happened to Warrick Dunn's mom, it may have been best for him to be elsewhere.

Weiner hates LSU, probably shunned Guice.

Don't forget about Kevin Franklin. He and Warrick Dunn shared a backfield at CHS, were in the same class, and were co-MVP's of the State. Franklin did go to LSU to play football and to run track. I think he ended up doing well in track but I don't know why his football career wasn't anywhere close to Dunn's post high school. They were of equal talent.

ETA: Warrick was technically the QB and Franklin was the RB of that backfield. They did not pass much, though Warrick could throw a decent pass.

Kevin Franklin was actually a bigger prospect than Dunn, (i think because of his size).

FSU was the cool school at the time, got all the media love like Bama does now, and LSU was a dumpster fire.

Every once in a while I'll think about if lsu could've closed the fence in the 90's. Think about Peyton Manning, Warrick Dunn, Reggie Wayne, Ed Reed, Kordell Stewart, etc.

LSU was not an attractive destination at that time.

LSU wasn't very good at time
Coaching staff at didn't think the instate kids were a priority

This is one of the reasons a number of people want the fence up and was the start of securing the boarders.

I was in school at the time and remember that you didn’t know which one was better, but every team wanted both Dunn & Franklin. Franklin was a Parade All American. Dunn's mom was murdered about a month before signing day making a deposit at a bank late at night. Bowden swept in and played like he was his Father and that was what won him over. He needed something in his life, but at same time, many wondered how he could leave his other family members behind.

Questions like this come up from time to time and it illustrates why their are so many people on this board that bitch about everything like we've always been an elite program.
