Drive to Amarillo on Day 1 then you can make it to Vegas the next day.
I made the drive once. Left BR at midnight, got to Amarillo at about 1pm. Crashed for 4 hr in Amarillo then got up and drove and saw the sun coming up when we pulled into Vegas.

Road tripping is all about stopping and checking out what you find along the way.

Vegas isn't a big draw for me. I mean, if I'm going that way I'd check it out. Not going way out of the way just to stop there though

OP if you think you've lived in a shite town I suggest New Mexico. Some areas in north NM are out of a horror novel.
Really once you are past the hill country Texas looks like hell.
It's summer I suggest Colorado. Also Nevada. Lake Mead is awesome to see and I've never been but I've never heard anyone say "Lake Tahoe sucks." It maybe too far out of way though. Pay attention to your gas in NM. There are long stretches of desolation. Probably as bad as Nevada to LA.
We drove from Houston to Durango. Parts of New Mexico will make you get on your hands and knees to kiss BR soil and you'll never speak ill of her again.
