Surface Pro Question: Should I buy now or wait?

I am going to be on the market for a new windows laptop in the next few months and I am thinking about making the switch.
Couple of questions:
Does the high end surface pro 3 have the ability to fully replace a good laptop?
Do you think the surface pro 4 is worth waiting for with no set release date?

Easily. I've used mine as a laptop replacement for a couple of years now.

If you're not in a hurry, I'd wait. I'd imagine that the Surface Pro 3 would drop in price quite a bit once the 4 is out. Then you can compare to see if the 4 is worth it.

I just took the plunge on one, thought about waiting but chances are it might be a while for the 4. Plus I had no laptop since March since my old one broke so I kinda needed one and didn't want to wait anymore
I got the i7 128GB model. I figured I could future proof it as much as possible with the i7/8GB RAM, the 128 GB is low but I figured I could always add a micro SD card if I need it. If I got the i5 model I wouldn't be able to "upgrade" to the i7 in the same way I could "upgrade" the 128GB with a micro SD card.
I am using it right now and have enjoyed every second of it so far. I would buy now unless you are patient, the only big thing the SP4 can improve on is battery and screen size so if that's a big deal to you wait, but its not for me as I keep it plugged in almost all of the time.

Yes - I have the i7 loaded with RAM. I run photoshop, video editing software, IBM RAD (java development IDE), and a few other pretty resource intensive software packages. I'm very happy with mine - I haven't used my desktop or laptop in months. I bought the docking station which allows me to keep my travel bag packed with power cord, mouse, etc. It makes it super easy to grab and go.
quote:Depends on how much you need a new device. I did read a report that the keyboard for the SP3 will be compatible with the SP4. Also, the SP4 might come in 12" and 14" screen sizes-- so if you need bigger, you might want to wait. I guess it all depends on how much you need the "latest and greatest"... if you "need" the latest model - you probably should wait. If you're happy with something that serves a purpose well, even if it isn't the latest and greatest... go for the SP3.
Do you think the surface pro 4 is worth waiting for with no set release date?

Please wait. The Surface Pro 4 is coming out soon after Windows 10 launch and will also most probably come with a USB type C connector for charging and plugging peripherals. USB-C is the port of the future. That alone is a very good reason to wait. If you are lucky it will also come with Intel's Skylake processors which should be a significant performance boost.

Had not heard this... is that "industry speculation" or has microsoft announced this?
I know USB-C is "the future" but last I heard there were still some manufacturers pushing back on the USB-C standard. Of course this was a while back - so maybe that all got resolved?
The Skylake processor alone isn't really significant to me vs. the i7. However, the USB-C is a huge factor. Especially with a device with so little storage space. Grap a couple of high capacity USB-C thumb drives and you're good to go. USB 3.0 is extremely fast... I think I read that USB-C is at minimum twice as fast as 3.0.

Replace a laptop? Ha, good luck picking that thing up by the keyboard.

These cost the same as a laptop. what's the advantage?
