Messi's already a GOAT candidate so I don't see how he fits the criteria. He's 28 years old and has been playing at an elite level for almost ten years. He has a lot more in common with a Lebron, Federer, Nadal, Tiger Woods than he does with a Mike Trout or Anthony Davis.

pretty much maxed out on potential of what he can do. he's great but he's not going to re-define it.

He's arguably in the best form of his life, at this very moment. He is absolutely redefining greatness.

Football, nobody seems to separate themselves besides Brady.

Unless the star is american, Tennis and Soccer players will never reach the celebrity status in the United States that american born superstar celebrity athletes achieve.

I don't think that guy's point is that Messi isn't an all time great. It's that Messi isn't the next all time great because he is currently an all time great. The point of this thread's subject is to make a prediction. It isn't to assert a currently observable fact.

He cannot and never will be able to do what great players like Lebron, MJ, Magic, Larry were able to accomplish.

I agree that Rodgers is one of the top 3 QB's in the league right now. But he's going to have to stay healthy, and win a lot more if he's going to get on Tom Brady's level. Brady is arguably one of the GOAT QB's.

Of course he is. But you're missing my point. Messi could retire today and he'll go down as one of the greatest to ever play the game. He might already be the greatest club player of all-time. The OP wants to know who is the next generational talent, someone who has the ability to go down as an all-time great but still has a long way to go. Lionel Messi doesn't meet the criteria because he's already there.

I don't follow soccer, but I would imagine if he's to be a generational talent, he would have to do what he's done on an international stage. I don't follow soccer, but maybe he has/hasn't. I am saying that because you mentioned club player.

Only because third world countries can play it with a goat's head for a ball and rocks to signify goal posts.

At his best, Aaron Rodgers is the best QB ever and it really isn't that close. He is the highest rated passer ever at 106.0. The next closest player is Tony Romo at 97.6.
We're all going to wake up one day and realize Rodgers was the best ever.

Rory, Andrew Luck, AD of players currently pro.
More than likely, its some kid right now.
If there was some American soccer player that reached Messi levels of greatness at the club level and led the US Men's team to World Cup finals, then his hype would be astronomical.
