Matuella with the next pick, or too many injury concerns?

I don't like losing, we should stop losing.

Can they afford to sign him? I would think Matuella is seriously considering going back to school unless he gets blown away by an offer

I imagine the majority of the money we have to play with is going to the Big 4.
Today we'll be looking at guys with no other options. College seniors that will either sign for cheap or go get a real job.

I haven't heard what he is asking but he just had TJ not long ago, would he even be able to pitch enough next season to up his price that much? It would still take over slot this late but low 7 figures seems reasonable on both ends. Can he really expect $2+ million now or at this time next year?
Posted on 6/9/15 at 9:18 am to MOT
Yea not enough money for that. I expect a lot of college players especially seniors so we can sign them under slot to get daz. We would have to draft Mike and pay over slot. Great way to go out with hopefully our last top 5 picks for a while.

I don't see eshleman being that expensive. He was rated around the 90's and other than his control and command he is kinda average. I think he signs a little bit under slot

Cute article. Also a bit wrong. Just because Amaro has been asking for the moon doesn't mean he isn't going to settle for the stars.
And if he turned down the Astros receive Cole Hamels while Phillies receive Lance McCullers, Phillips, Vincent Velasquez, Santana? Well, he better be getting the moon from another team.

If VV does anything close to what McCullers is doing, we don't need Hamels

Saving a couple hundred thousand here or there isn't going to make a big impact on Cameron. His demand was so high that he will have to be signed mostly on the savings from the big money picks Bregman, Tucker, and Eshelman. The slot value of #79 is over 700K, you could scrounge up 300 or 400 extra by going the senior route in the rest of the top 10 to put together a 7 figure offer to Matuella. Of course if he is asking for over 2 million or something then yeah, it's obviously not reasonable. But I just don't see where he has the leverage to ask for that.

Nothing says he has to trade Hamels. And would you want to trade McCullers, Velasquez Phillips and Santana for Hamels? I wouldn't with the crop of FA pitchers available next year
Posted on 6/9/15 at 9:44 am to ShaneTheLegLechler
No no no...that's not my point. I would never make that trade. Just pointing out the article is pretentious if it's basic point is the Astros don't have the top-flight ammo to make a deal for Hamels. That's bullshite.
Posted on 6/9/15 at 9:47 am to MOT
Has there been any speculation on what number Bregman will sign for?
Posted on 6/9/15 at 9:47 am to Jwho77
Oh okay. I don't think he's saying that, he's being realistic with what it would take- I disagree with him/agree with you that they would strongly consider Velasquez/McCullers/Phillips combo, especially if Velasquez impresses like McCullers. I do think that's going to be the minimum to get the deal done and I don't want to give up those two pitchers
They absolutely have the top flight ammo, just not worth it to give it up. I am interested to see what the cost for Cueto might be

A few hundred k will help if after signing the first 2 guys we can only offer daz around 4.5 mill

I don't want to trade VV or McCullers and I don't think Lunhow will either. Certainly not for a guy like hamels who is 31 and likely will begin to decline.
Both of those guys are young, under team control, cheap and McCullers may end up being bwetter than Hamels THIS SEASON when the dust settles.
I would rather go after a proven #2 or #3 guy from another team that would be less costly in terms of top propects. I'm fine building a deal around Appel, but his value is not what it was to start the season.

I've kinda changed my mind about trading for a pitcher, at least for now. With the way LMJ has thrown and the potential for VV to match him, we may just want to to sit back and wait. Add the kids to Keuchel, Jabroni and Obie while replacing the latter with Feldman again late July? That's pretty damn good.
If the two rookie flame throwers are legit, are we even shopping for a TOR starter this offseason? It could be that Feldman is our $8 million 5th starter.
