That didn't take long. CCA tagged redfish caught by unregistered angler.

"Well it happened again on Memorial Day weekend! Michelle Jewel caught a tagged redfish in grand isle but had not bought a ticket yet so she released the fish. 50 still swimming..."

I must be unethical, but if I caught one and I hadn't registered I'd be calling someone in my family who had.

Idiots.. I need to get out on the water. Haven't been in like 2 weeks

Not sure how claiming prize works but I think you have to take and pass a lie detector

Pictures or it didn't happen. Call me cynical, but CCA loves putting out these stories to try to drum up entries.

Tournament fraud is a felony. You'd be guilty of stealing.

It happened...
I bet the kayak launch on the island will be packed for the next few weeks.

I don't do the STAR thing but I think if I caught one of the tagged refish I would be forced to clip that tag off and eat that fish.

I register every year, so I would never be placed in this situation.
I'm just talking as if I were an unregistered angler who caught one. I sure as hell wouldn't have let it go.

I'd mount the damn thing, tag and all.

Of course they do. It's only logical, right?

You're involved in the tag/release process, right? Does CCA ever release the tag location vs catch location info? I was watching an outdoor show yesterday I believe and they said one last year was caught miles from where released while another was caught about 300 yards from where it was released.

Damn, from the looks of that pic, that's the rocks near my camp.

I'm not sure if the actual coordinates are released. Periodically, CCA will send out pictures where fish are being released. When I tagged, we purposely included land marks in the background to give hints where fish are being released.
The release/re-catch information is used for scientific purposes but I can't say for sure whether the actual data are released to the public. I simply do not know the answer.
The data on distances where caught/released is available across all tagging programs. Redfish tend to be caught close to where they were tagged. there's not as much information on trout due to mortality rates and sheer numbers/migration, etc.

Why not just register after you catch it? If you're going to be unethical you might as well claim the prize.
