How do I get rid of rats in my backyard?

We have what seems like a village of rats (~8-10) that come eat under our bird feeder, all of the feed that is spilled out, scat, etc. We've had one or two in the past, but not this many. Our house backs up to a wooded area, so I know it's not our house/yard specifically that is infested.
I've tried a few poisons of the past week. Tried one of those Tomcat "stations" and they didn't even go inside. So then I scattered an entire pack of Just One Bite down, and saw some of them eating it and in the morning it was gone. Well tonight there is a village out there again.
Has anyone here had success with ridding themselves of these pests, and how did you do it?

Some type of terrier in the backyard would work the best.

if they are eating the rat poison, just keep putting it out, as it takes a while for it to work...
be careful with it though, as it will kill birds and pets too...and it is not a nice way to go, at all.....

If you're in the country you would not have this problem.
You have to be in the city or trailer park. Only explanation.

get some snakes
So true. Put a snake out there rats will haul arse you won't see them again for a while if ever.
Big king snake is best. They also hang around if there's food and shelter.

They aren't going to eat much bait with the good bird food around.
Get some packets from the feed store, or tractor supply to make poison water. You will need to put it in a quail feeder to keep from killing pets.

House cats won't do shite. Get some wildfire, and burn them in their homes, and burn them in their beds. It's the only way.

Put the bird feeder away for a few weeks.

Get a large glass or metal jar/container. Big enough to hold several gallons of water at ten inches or so deep while leaving another foot or more from the top. Like a large tall crawfish pot.
Dig a hole and place the top of the pot at ground level. Take and oil up a metal rod and secure across the center of the container leaving the middle section clean. Take peanut butter and heavily coat the middle section of the rod.
They will try to walk the rod to get to the peanut butter, slip and fall into container. The cannot climb out and will succumb to severe over hydration.
Clean out daily until no

Frats or rats?
This is difficult to determine sometimes, one group is completely worthy of poison and the other are vermin.
Confused yet?
I am.
