Everything at ESPN is irrelevant except for live sports. You could replace any show, any employee, frick you could replace any ten employees or any ten shows and hardly anyone would care and ESPN's bottom dollar wouldn't be touched.
So don't act like you're fricking Adam Smith discovering new economic theory here. The debate is about the quality of content Simmons delivered compared to ESPN's other garbage, two minute attention span, let's see how many twitter mentions we can get, non live sports programming.

However live sports make up their revenue stream and are the reason they can charge every cable or satellite subscriber 5 or however many bucks per month...even the ones like me that don't even watch them.
Try $8-$9 including the SEC network etc;

Revenue wise, he was at best a blip and at worst actually costing them money.
Simmons created content and in no way was he not more profitable than any other personality. Normally I'd stop reading here but since you clearly don't have any facts I'll keep reading.
quote:
Right or wrong and love him or hate him, the notion that ESPN somehow "made a mistake" (as a few on here have implied) is simply not supported by the facts.
If Simmons goes to FS1 or another channel he will instantly bring viewership there and erode ESPN's base.
quote:
Considering the really dick way that they handled this, they seem to be exceptionally confident of that.
How is refusing to be a mouthpiece and towing the company line on things you clearly don't believe when you are a content guy being a dick??
quote:
They will not lose viewers and they will not lose revenue. That's my sole premise
30 for 30 is the only non live sports show that consistently made it into the top 20 cable show ratings on ESPN. You are a fool if you think Simmons is done and won't go to a competitor and erode ESPN's base. That's my premise.

Simmons was making a ton of money for ESPN and now he's going to go to FS1 and really make ESPN pay by taking their viewership, huh?
You seem to know a lot about economics and business. Where's the link to your blog? I would love to become a reader and educate myself about these things.
You may be a business maven but you need to learn to read a little closer and refute arguments that were actually made. Example: Where did I say Simmons was "done"? I'm a fan of his, for Christ's sake!
Arguing that he was more "profitable" than other personalities? Where did I make that comparison and what does that have to do with the price of tea in China? They're expendable, too! It's the NFL and NBA programming that isn't.
Or is your argument that Simmons is more valuable than the live sports programming, as well? Because that was my actual argument, not that weird ranting perversion that you were "debating".

Everything you've posted so far leads me to believe that you suck real bad.

Wasn't your original premise that ESPN lost money on Simmons' content? And that they won't lose viewership?
All I am saying is that he is one of the two personalities that matter on that channel (SVP being the other) and he will I rely get picked up by someone - and that since ESPNs non live programming sucks, that people would easily follow bill to another sports channel to get their news.

This is where you're missing the mark. Just because you think it sucks doesn't mean it doesn't rate better than everything every other sports network has to offer.

He doesn't do the news.

FS1's nightly show is better than sportscenter but at the end of the day all you are doing is showing a sequence of highlights. You could do something like a 30 for 30 as a leadin to your highlight show. You can have him on for 5 minute segment on whatever. There are a lot of different ways to get folks to switch. You are nuts if you think people won't check it out if he moves to NBC sports, CBS sports, or FS1

Every night?

If Simmons just showing up on TV was a big rating grab the Grantland Basketball Hour would've been a weekly thing. The main asset he's bringing to anyone is his online presence which is why it won't really hurt ESPN.

Espn's bread and butter is live sports. They have a history of cutting bait with talent when they start to become bigger than the brand and people identify with the individual more than the brand.

Ding ding ding. This. For all of his fanfare and fans and I count myself as one of them ESPN doesn't live or die by him or grantland. They make their money by showing football (pro and college) and basketball product.

If this touted "major following" exists, he shouldn't have to shell out his own money.
But, yeah, if professional freedom is what he craves, podcasting is his future. It's what he does best so it would also be professionally convenient.

Umm, no. You should know, you took the time to quote the exact passage.
Internet, I am disappoint.

if he winds up putting a dime of his own money up he needs a new agent
someone will gladly write the checks

Or if he's confident enough in his brand and wants complete autonomy, he could foot it himself. No bleeps, no required amount of material or deadlines, no twitter suspensions, nada
It's not like these things are an expensive startup. I mean slopes made a podcast about the OT

His writing was pretentious, douchey, and occasionally funny.
Most other writers on Grantland are borderline unreadable. ZachLowe, however, is a fricking gem.
ESPN will be fine. It is what it is.

Simmons pet projects were "prestige" platforms for ESPN, they drove traffic not necessarily revenue producers
I predict Simmons will continue to executive produce from his own production company. Sports movies, docs etc. he will find a platform say HBO or Showtime for his productions. He will definitely own a podcast, they are negotiating the BS Report name ownership with ESPN. I think he also does a deal with FS1 or TNT for basketball coverage spots. Something like features, interviews, commentary for spots before NBA broadcasts
There is also the possibility he goes to a place like SI which would love his columns and video shorts
I also predict He will have his own YouTube channel for things like house eats. What sucks is no more work with jalen, I loved his work with him
