Pancreatitis is why we had to put our german shepherd to sleep. Treatment can easily get into the thousands and it doesn't always work.

Our dog had a stone removed about a year ago... Was somewhere around $1600. Vets are expensive. Gotta pay to play unfortunately

Isn't pancreatitis basically pancreatic cancer?

Honestly, that sounds reasonable for what you're getting.
The bloodwork is a killer--a lot of times that's sent to an outside lab and they gouge you. ER services aren't cheap either. Someone with 8 years of school has to give up their evenings and weekends to be there for situations like this.

Not necessarily. It can be caused by venomous animals, diets that are too high in fat, metabolic disorders, etc.

He eats Blue Buffalo-Fish and brown rice
Maybe too many rawhides and peanut butter though

Want it to live?
That's a severe issue.

Where did you come up with this number? Put it down.

Weeks stay and monitoring? $1500 might be high, but I paid similar for a weeks stay for my dog with an illness. You could get a 2nd opinion?

Look, I'm sorry about your dog. It's just that swelling of the pancreas at that age is not a good sign, and unless it was some rare environmental cause, chances are it's going to happen again.

Did he eat any pork products?

$1500 is a fair price for an estimate.
Could be that, could be $1,000. They quoted you the high end.
Most vets don't gouge patients/clients.

Where did you bring your dog?

Sherwood South Animal Hospital

Jesus you frickers are morons
Your vet is a moron for charging you 1500$ for pancreatitis treatment (or brilliant, depending on how you look at it). That is remarkably high. Was the dog in the vet for a month? Your vet is gauging you big-time. I have a little dog that has pancreatitis - I think the bill was less than $400 when it was diagnosed.
Your dog will be unable to eat any fat without having the nastiest smelling explosive diarrhea you could ever wish not to encounter. The no fat food they have to eat is awful, mine wouldn't eat it and its $$$ as hell. She lost so much weight, she looked like one of those dog rescue commercials. So I cook her food now. I know it sounds stupid, but it saves a ton of money. I boil venison or ground chicken or turkey (whichever is on sale) rinse it off and add brown rice and peas and carrots.

Well if this is an emergency call the price isn't bad. You'd pay $100+ an hour for an AC repairman to come out on the weekend. Why shouldn't the vet get to charge extra for emergency work?
Posted on 4/25/15 at 7:26 pm to tigercraig
We've had a few bills in that range over the years with our many dogs. We are lucky enough to have an emergency vet pretty close by, but emergency hours aren't cheap. Add on a few nights over there with iv meds and you'll easily hit the $1,000 mark. Can another vet treat our dogs cheaper? Definitely. Would I get the same care? Maybe. Regardless, our dogs seem to have the bigger issues on weekends, holidays, or late at night so we often don't even have a choice but to go there.

Most don't, but some vets do. The one I had prior to my current vet was sky high. They charged me over $400 for a simple spay. The tests they ran before the surgery were unnecessary and pricey. One of them was to determine if she was going to have a bad reaction to the anesthesia - even though that same vet did emergency surgery on her when when I found her.
I love my current vet. He is older and has seen it all and can diagnose a lot of problems without all the BS high dollar tests.
