spot on analysis
Kurtz for all intents and purposes was co-director on star wars
lucas didn't get the technical stuff, Kurtz did. Lucas wasn't good with the actors so Kurtz had to come behind him. With the way they finished filming, they had 1 week, and Kurtz was second unit director
he and lucas were a partnership. and so while people can say "oh look at Kurtz's filmography", well look at George lucas' and Kurtz is a producer who gave visual influence to two pretty awesome movies in addition to star wars and empire.

What is he talking about? C3PO is gay...one is enough.

Looking back at Return of the Jedi, we should have know the prequels would be disappointing.
But then, I live in a world in which Independance Day is now mysteriously considered a good movie. Maybe the suck has lowered the bar over the years.

you are full of assumptions. I never said Jedi sucked, but looking back it was kind of a canary in the colemine that the main focus wasn't the story as much as selling merch/toys. From well before the reissues were done, Empire was ranked #1 and Jedi 3rd of the OT on most lists i saw, including my own. At the time it was released, we knew that the final battle was supposed to be Wookies instead of Ewoks. Maybe it was a cost issue since then you had to have actors in the suits then and probably easier to find a bunch of midgets/kids than 7' tall dudes, idk but most people i knew over the age of 7 or so thought the Ewoks were lame even then

SW 9/10
TESB 10/10
RotJ 7/10
Ewoks. Not even once.

jedi just hasn't held up as well into adult hood
you see lucas reusing ideas and shots from the first movie and just repackaging it for this one. The ewoks are in there to sell toys, plain and simple
so after we've been battered with the prequels people kind of see the same shite to a far lesser degree in 'jedi'
vader's role in jedi really is the beginning of the biggest fault in the prequels. so all of a sudden vader is being set up for a redemption. He doesn't choke anyone, or kill anyone, etc. after going hog wild in empire. vader is important to us, and lucas lets that seep into 'jedi' and then goes full retard in the prequels with virginal birth and stupid prophecies.
if he's so important, then why does the emperor call him a slave while he's right there and treat him like shite in front of other people? he's like a lap dog, not some key to the galaxy. and when he's not fricking taking care of business (killing rebels and jedi and attempting to turn powerful jedi) then he's no fricking good. He doesn't do shite in the movie until the throne room with luke. beyond the light saber fight in jedi (a great one, and those scenes are awesome) he just stands around like a retard not doing anything, with no clear motivation
empire is best because the characters are stronger, but things are way more clearer. Luke is the clear protagonist and his goal is to become a jedi, vader is the clear antagonist and his mission is to find the "jedi" who destroyed the death star and either kill him like the rest or turn him into an asset.
in the original things aren't discombobulated at all, but in jedi things are kind of muddied...the prequels don't even have a fricking protagonist in one of the fricking movies and the antagonist appears briefly, his goal not revealed until his plan has played out, I mean it just sucks
and after watching all of that shite, you can see the roots of the prequels in 'return of the jedi'

and I wouldn't say 'jedi' sucks, but it isn't worthy of the trilogy.
the original and the empire strikes back are in such a higher stratosphere...definitely empire.

Going out of your way to include every color of the rainbow just for the PC sake of it is forced and annoying. And now, "activists" are whining because there aren't any gay characters.
This is why I think Lucas' biggest problem was the crowd he was surrounded by at the time he made the movies. This is what led to the elected queen, the unnecessary neo-political messages, the unintentionally racist Gungams, etc.
I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, but the trade federation aliens were definitely racist
'jedi' really attempts to satisfy the diversity quotas
I never felt like lando was a diversity cast, nor do I feel like john boyega is one. he just looks natural in those images.
anyone ever notice in desolation of smaug while thorin is giving his speech to the town, they just randomly keeping switching to a close up of this black woman's face... and the new oz movie is the pits.

Industry rankings disagree with you. Star Wars makes many top tens. Empire rarely cracks the top 100 lists.

That is definitely not true. We talked about it in the mid 90s all of the time.

Empire is one of the greatest films ever made. Ever. Far and away the best Star Wars Movie made.
Who gives a shite what industry rankings say.

I've seen you say over and over and over (and over) that the "characters are stronger." A) it's the same characters from Star Wars, for the most part, and B) the overall acting and especially the dialog is a million times better in Star Wars.
The glass craft set work and other visual effects are about the same in both, which was the state of the art at the time, so I don't think you could say Empire did a better job.
Empire also has no real ending. They may as well put a vintage TV "to be continued" caption at the end. The scene transitions and overall story arc are infinitely superior in Star Wars.

I've never gotten the hate for Jedi. I think it comes down to an age thing. I was born the year Star Wars was released so Jedi was the first one I remember seeing at the theater. I will never forget that feeling. I even liked the Ewoks, but I was 6 and they were kind of made for me. Also, comparing it to the prequels pisses me off.

The acting is way better in empire. The characters are stronger because in Star Wars they are archetypes whereas in empire they are way less superficial and there is more depth.

I couldn't agree more. RotJ is clearly not as strong as Empire and SW, but there is no reason for the hate.
The hate was something I only heard for the first time when Clerks had their SW discussions. Some of my friends, long term SW fans/RotJ fans, all of a sudden agreed with the hate. I don't get it....

quote:No, it really isn't, and the screenplay for Star Wars is infinitely better, measured by the fact that its lines are quoted far more often. Sure, Empire gives you the often misquoted "Luke, I am your father," but that's about it. Star Wars has a wealth of quotable lines.
The acting is way better in empire.
quote:Ah. Now I understand. Some wormy-lipped fat guy told you what to think and you've been parroting it ever since. Yeah, that happens a lot in showbiz and elsewhere. One ideologue will say something from his ivory tower and the chorus will fall in line like dominoes. It's like Citizen Kane. No one has the balls to dispute it for fear of being kicked out of Brigadoon.

quote:Well, based on the comments we've read so far, it would seem to have a lot to do with the making of toy money. I guess Empire is more communist or something.

One thing's for sure. Gary Kurtz is definitely Fox's boyfriend.

Actually I very much disliked Roger ebert. your assesment isn't far from my own
But you say industry, and every review you'll find reads like that. I actually didnt understand that I liked empire more until about 10 years ago. After buying the trilogy 500 times I just instinctively put in empire first
enpire is only so great because it improves so much on the original, so I wouldn't dare dismiss the original. Splitting hairs. I am watching the original tonight. i also think the force awakens would do better to follow the footprint of Star Wars rather than empire. I hope we get the movie we've been waiting for. There's a lot of cause for optimism.
Say what you will about the prequels, but in the end they just don't connect. They're boring.

Nothing wrong with toy making, but you can't let the cart come before the horse. Jedi also reuses ideas. Even if you think empire isn't better. It definitely expands upon the force, and brings new ideas and new characters (not that jedi doesn't do new things)

Mark it down. The force awakens will be forever known as the equal of the greatest star wars movie ever...if not the greatest.
