Vagrants in New Orleans

I drive by one every morning on Elysian Fields on the way to work...
The dude looks no older than me (31) and is just out there with a sign....Does not look sick or handicapped in any way, but I always gave him the benefit of the doubt.
One day last year I saw him hiding behind the cable box in the median and he was on a cell phone...
Today, I looked for him and he was gone and replaced by two even YOUNGER looking vagrants. Maybe 21-25 years old at most and they were smiling and holding up "clever" signs.
WTF is wrong with these young people? Get a effin JOB. What makes them think that on MY way to work I want to pay for their living?
It's starting to really irritate me.
A guy I work with told me that they all live together in crack houses around town. (Quarter, East, Westbank, etc)
Anyone else have any stories like this? I know there was a recent article about them. Does the younger generation suck that bad?

Saw one a while back standing there with his sign. I notice a new backpack laying on the ground near him... with a fricking Victorinox logo on it. Those things are at least $80.

Their job is scraping up enough money to buy heroin.
You should help them out.

Yes. We are all a bunch of bums that just sit around begging for your money. Your observation of three young men is an accurate representation of all young people across all socioeconomic and cultural classes.

Yeah they're always right there at the Claiborne intersection. I don't know why anyone would ever give them money.

Fear & Loathing of the NOLA Gutter Punk
Do not give them money. Many of them are voluntarily living like that (for reasons I'll never understand). The ones near I-10 at St. Charles are situated right next to the Catholic shelter but can't get in unless they're sober... so they're looking for crack money. I tried to give one a granola bar one day. He didn't seem interested.

Many are drug dependent.
Sad thing is, many choose to be this way.
What is sadder is the ones who dont. But most ha e no clue how to escape that hell they are living.
Good news is there are people that can help- not by giving a dollar but by showing them a new life via detox, rehab, and then how to be productive in society.
unfortunately, most who need it dont want help and those who do get shite on the first time they fail.
It is what it is

They are not just looking for crack money. They go for cigarettes and cheap booze money as well. The St. Charles/Carondelet exit is prime real estate because of the short walk to the Exxon for the aforesaid provisions. Also if you want to throw them some meth money, they won't complain.

They really need to start removing these people.
I moved here in 2008 and you'd see one every now and then.
They are on every major intersection now. For some reason, it annoys the shite out of me

The quickest way to make that happen is for people to stop giving to them. I can't, for the life of me, understand why people do so.

No shite. I'll say they get 1 car per every 10 times or more I am stopped at a light. Over the course of the day I guess it adds up.

Admins, please move to either the Piss & Bums board or the NOLA Sucks board. Thanks.

I snapped this a while back by the cemeteries. Genius idea. Right where they stand.

These people aren't from NOLA. The ones off of Elysian Fields are mostly from Texas and have all come through the penal system at some point for drugs. I see most of them a few times a year for mental health assessments. They're not mentally ill. They're lazy assholes that think mommy and daddy didn't love them enough. There's one kid out there that looks awful. The last time he was in my office he asking if I could contact his parents for money for an attorney. I call them and his dad tells me started that month off with over $10k in his checking account. He blew through it in 2 weeks so his dad cut him off. I have no sympathy for most of those lowlifes out there.
With that being said, I've seen some absolute lost souls come off the streets. Those are the ones I truly feel for.
