Moving Out of An Apartment?

So I'm moving out of my apartment next month, and I'm trying to do everything possible to make this as easy a process as possible. A little background, I've moved around quite a bit, and I've already twice been f'ed over after leaving an apartment that was fine, only to receive a note that there were X, Y, Z mysterious damages and I wouldn't be receiving my security deposit.
What can I do to avoid this? My dad said to never leave an apartment without having a final walk-through and agreed to terms on the amount of the deposit to be refunded. However, when I spoke with the property managers, they said they only do a "cleanliness walkthrough" and that the "damages walkthrough" is only after the apartment has been vacated.
Do I have any legal grounds to demand that it's done beforehand? If they say no, am I pretty much just f'ed? I can't really call their bluff as I have a job I have to leave for, but I'm just curious if there's any legal precedent behind what sort of action I can take.
Appreciate any help!

Take pictures with date stamp. Make sure pictures cover every spot.

take pics of every room, so if they say something was messed up, you have dated pics they state otherwise

Always take before and after pictures.

your problem sounds like a strange one to me...I have moved in and out of a heck of a lot of apartments and I have never once not done a final walkthrough after my stuff was moved out...I can't really blame them for not wanting to do it before you move out, as a lot of damage occurs when moving furniture in and out...
just tell them when you want to walk through and get your shite out before that time...they arrive, you walk through and hand them the key...

I was planning on doing it just as you mentioned. I would absolutely have my stuff out before the final walk through, but they said they can't do one until after I've given the keys and vacated the premises.
This just screams a scam to me. I was ignorantly naive before, but now it just seems to obvious.

man, that sounds odd as hell...are they saying that you can't be present during the final walkthrough?...
I am guessing there is some miscommunications going on...

They're correct, a fair amount of damage can happen during moveout and so they don't want to do it until you've moved out and handed over the keys.
But you should have every right to insist on being present for the walkthrough, so do that.

Sophisticated operations will never do so. They just want you gone and away.
Before pics are important.
A landlord has nothing to gain doing a final walk thru with you and much to lose if you badger them over everything. Including a physical altercation if they don't agree with you.
Take a lot of pics and submit with certified requests for deposit.
Stay in contact with the leasing office.

Cut your losses. They have no intention of giving you your full deposit back, and won't.

Worst I've ever had was $50 removed for cleanup. Pissed me off because they place was spotless except I had a small pile of dust I forgot to put in the trash can.
Bitch! $50.00 for one little broom sweep.
As stated. Clean up when everything is out. then hit every room with pictures. When they claim damages, send the pictures to call their bluff.

There is no bluff. They hold the deposit, not the OP. it sucks, I know.

Yes it is a bluff. They have to prove those damages. Pictures along with an attorney letterhead will get that deposit back pretty fast.

Yep. Tiger Plaza at least gave me half. That place was clean as shite but the mini blinds were dusty & oven/stove had some baked on shite I could not get off.

If you can get an attorney who wants to fight over a $1000 deposit in small claims court good luck.

Well, in my case, everyone fracking person I know is an attorney along with my dad, so the one time I had a problem, I typed the letter, he signed it and the apartment immediately complied.

Pictures and some people even walk through and video everything.

Nah, just get an attorney friend to crank out a quick letter.

So can your dad or someone you know, write a letter for the OP brother?
