i would fire someone for that, unless it was an emergency of some sorts

I'd say unless you were in surgery or in a coma that you are quite capable of calling in sick yourself.

My mom had to call in sick for me when I started my first job out of college a couple months in. I have over-sized tonsils and some strep flared up on me (I get it about once a year) and they got so bad that I literally couldn't talk. I texted my mom because I didn't know what else to do, granted, I did go into the office later that day to show that it was legit. My boss got a good laugh.

Laryngitis might be an acceptable reason.

Usually it's because one of my installers is in jail and can't make the call themselves.

Are you European?
I'd say that 85.38% of sick call-ins are BS regardless of who does the calling.

Eh, I don't call in. Everything is done through email.
And who cares? If they have sick days, why shouldn't they be able to use them?

Ive done it while dry heaving.
My uvula was resting on my tongue and choking me when I tried to talk.

Honestly, I do this as well. If I'm calling in before work hours though, no one will be there to answer my call and who knows if anyone ever bothers to check voicemail. I know I don't. frick voicemail.

My SO had to do it once when I had laryngitis. The GM flipped out on her and told her that I needed to be a man and call him myself.

Agreed. However, I think if someone can call in themselves they should. That at least makes it seem like you feel bad about missing.

I either text or email my boss so I guess anyone could technically "call in sick" for me.
