I enjoyed the documentary. My biggest surprise is how none of these people really said that Scientology is a bunch of quacks... Instead they say stuff like "I left because of the abuse".
None of them said "I left because they told me Xenu dropped me into a volcano and my spirit escaped into some clams and then eventually some people".
I havent watched this specific series but I don't think they suck people in with the stories about xenu, I think the focus is on the self help aspect stuff that suckers the suckers into joining in the first place.
I have read some of the stuff Hubbard wrote, and he laces his theories with some scientifically accepted fact, you know what they say about a 'good lie" having an element of truth, that's sort of what he did. Pretty sure Hubbard was just looking for a gimmick to get out of paying taxes not to start a brutal cult with SS leadership.
The guy that said "only in the US could this happen" is wrong, this could happen anywhere but the fact that it does go in in the US is at least a little surprising. Seems we have no problem burning to death cults in Waco, and while our govt has plenty of time and fuel to start wars in the Mid East, tell bakers who to sell wedding cakes to and run guns to drug cartels while not protecting our borders, they don't have the wit to put an end to this nonsense.

My statement had very little to do with the persecution of christians.
You made an origin statement...that you were surprised that they formed and survived in the US...I disagree, and pointed out the formation of Christianity in a much more hostile environment. I just added on the comment about what happens when you leave, which you touched on in your mormon comment.
I think the origin of every religion involved a whole host of people who considered it ludicrous and were very hostile to the early adherents. At least in the US, a free open society, no one gets murdered for it.

Man's take on religion though.
I'm a non beliver, but the Jesus I read about would ake anyone in and would welcome enemies and friends. He was the model person. Washing the feet of lepers and stuff.
It's a shame what is done in his name.
If only the mantra of Christianity was just to "do as Jesus did".
It's not the fault of the believer, but of those who centuries ago bastardized the messages.
People actually owning and reading the bible is a recent phenomenon (only last few centuries). It was only the realm of the elite and Church figures.
Religion is a creation of Man, that is undeniable. It bothers me that the ones least likely to be following the "Golden Rule" are the most "devout".

Didn't watch the documentary, but just read about Xenu on Wikipedia.
That story is batshit crazy.

The early history of Mormonism was fairly bloody, both as victims and as perpetrators. And there have been several deaths and unexplained disappearances associated with Scientology.

Paul Haggis is pretty fricking famous and was the main interviewee in the film. He has 2 Academy Awards.

They don't. You're not supposed to find out about him until you have reached a really high level that a lot of people don't even get to.

Havgis's description of what he thought when he finally got the secret papers explain xenu and the aliens and what not was freaking hilirious. He basically said he was so far in at that point he just started rationalizing things.

Which is why Scientology won't survive the internet. Anyone who can't find out this shite before getting neck deep in it is beyond help.

How did they continue to survive? It's such a well-crafted cult, if you know what I mean.

I think that's a pretty common characteristic of all religions...especially in the past, not so much today.

I hope something changes in regards to their nonprofit status. Total bullshite and a mockery to actual religious and charitable organizations.

I got real into reading about Scientology when I was in Barnes and Noble and saw a New Yorker with an expose article by Lawrence Wright inside. It is a very long article, it was almost 20 pages in the magazine but it's a great read.

Just finished reading this. Long, but you're right, a great read. The end of the article where Davis offers up documentation to prove Hubbard's military accolades...just WOW. He received medals that weren't even around during his service??
The lengths they go to to cover all their lies is just insane!!

That was funny as hell... he was like "What the frick is this shite?"

This info has been out for almost 20 years. It has survived the internet.
Also people inside are taught to never search Scientology on the internet or ever watch any TV about because they are taught it is all propaganda and lies.
When Tom Cruise first read the Xenu stuff when he made operating Thetan level VIII, he freaked out big time and was cussing up a storm.

Yeah people should read up on Tommy Davis, he is just as bad as Miscavige in a lot of ways, in terms of bullying people.
