I've owned this film since 2005, but I've never watched it. Finally did today, it was slow but parts were really funny like him stealing the wallet back. I think i liked it.

I want to-but I have such a hard time watching Paul Giamatti. I can't explain it, but he just makes me uncomfortable. Silly but true.

I laughed pretty hard when Thomas Haden Church explains Giamatti's behavior at the vineyard with "His mom died"

I saw it when it first came out on dvd and thought it was pretty boring as did my friends. May need to watch it again someday.

I'M NOT DRINKING A frickING MERLOT.
True story: many vineyards from Napa Valley to Tuscany credit the international downturn of the merlot market in the last decade specifically to this movie.

He's a pretty damned good actor. Although I can see what you're saying - his roles in things like this (Sideways) and American Splendor kind of have that effect. But I'm pretty sure that's on purpose and a characteristics of the the characters he's portraying in those movies.
I've never seen John Adams for some reason. I'd like to see him in something like that to see if he imparts a different vibe to the character.

Love this movie - in my all-time top 20.
You should watch John Adams. Terrific.

My favorite Giamatti movie is Barney's Version (2010)

Saw it at the theater. Enjoyed it much.
Was really getting into Pinot noir when ithe movie came out, then almost felt embarrassed to buy it in the wine shop after that because so many noobs were trying it because of the movie.

I like Giamatti, just didn't care for Sideways. I do my best to avoid those people, I don't really want to watch a movie about them.

Yes, but the owners of some of the best vineyards in Tuscany, one of whom I know personally, own a few plots in napa

And plenty of super-Tuscans have merlot added
