Bradycap freindly deal, Peyton takes 4 million pay cut, Drew.........

Don't get me wrong I am a big Drew Brees fan and also believe that this franchise would not be where it is today without Drew but when Brady takes a cap friendly deal for less money and Peyton takes a 4 million dollar pay cut to help Denver keep some of there player. Are we wrong to expect Drew to do the same considering we started out at nearly 28 million over the cap this year which is a hell of a lot more then both the Patriots and Broncos were when Brady and Manning's respective deals were made. In my opinion Drew is in the same situation as both of them with life and certainly money after football as he has many indorsement deals and several businesses of his own. Let me know what you guys think.

Do you know anything about how much more/less money we could save with Drew restructuring next year as opposed to this year???
Before going on and bitching about Drew not restructuring, have one of the Salary Cap guys inform you....

I'm not saying the extension Brady did two or three years ago wasn't cap friendly(it was but he also got more guaranteed money so it wasn't completely out of the goodness of his heart), but the two restructures he did the past two years were not pay cuts and only shifting of his money. Hell the one this year didn't even affect the cap, only making a cash payout happen at a later date.
So this whole Brady taking one for the team is WAY overblown.
No Manning took an actual pay cut. Hats off to him.
I expect next year they'll do a Brady type extension with Brees that helps both parties. A little surprised they didn't do it this year but we are projected to have at least $10 mil in cap space without touching him if all the moves they are trying to do come to fruition. So it makes more sense to redo it next year in that case.
I'm not expecting him to do a Manning. I don't think he is that nice.

We actually wouldn't save anything doing what most people consider a restructure next year (shifting base to bonus to push money to future years).
He has one year left next year and it HAS to be an extension or a pay cut for us to save money and keep him.

Drew's gotta put food on the table for his family....ok? How's he supposed to do that if he asks for a paycut???

P Manning and the Broncos front office are in win now mode. Brees has 4 kids who he wants to grow up and remain rich. Take off the black and gold glasses these are life decisions brees is making. InB4 he has enough money already

Getting thrown to the curb in SD made a big impact on Drew. Knowing he could be gone at any time he wants every dollar he can get.

For one next year the only thing we could do to save money would be an extension considering I really do not see brees taking a true pay cut. We could do an extension this year and save close to the same amount. Also I agree that Brees has to take care of his family but I alos agree that he has made hundreds of million of dollars and for someone who preaches team team team he has done nothing salary wise to help with our situation.

He's not going to take a paycut for the team, at least this season. Hence the inb4 comment so there is no need to go to a salary cap guru. I know how much money we can save, but we are already shopping a lot of players this season for financial and football reasons.

Saints should be doing it this year actually. We don't save anything but the saints decided not to

No he hasn't. And the career earnings for brady and manning are higher than brees

Brees was underpaid for years here in NOLA. That helped us win a SB. I'm not crying for him, but I'm also not begrudging him his due.
Move on, next.
Move on, next.

He can go to Jimmy John's and eat

Brees had to squeeze our nuts a couple years ago because he was part of the NFLPA's Executive Committee.
IMO he felt like he had to set an example, he had an excuse to get more money, and obviously we had to pay. Now he is certainly worth every penny, but it sucks that it had to go down like that.

I'm going to take a stab at this without knowing all the details of his contract.
First, the organization decided not to restructure his deal this year, not Brees. So the OP is a bit off by blaming DB. The reason for them doing this? I think it's due to their ability to get well below the cap with the deals they are restructuring currently. If they do Brees now, that will help even more so; however, where will that leave us next year? Most likely we won't have many restructuring options at that time, and we will have some big free agent decisions to be made. They will need Brees' contract to be restructured next year in order to get below next year's cap. Doing it this year will give us no flexibility in '16.
I could be wrong on all of this, but again I don't know all the contracts of the players and their details. This is the most logical reason based on my current knowledge.

To be fair, if this is apples to apples, Drew would do this in his next contract (his last).

I completely believe this. He showed this when he absolutely refused to play under the franchise tag a few years back. Not that I blame him, just using that as an example of the impact his SD experience made upon him.

Technically speaking if we redid the deal this year and didn't touch what we saved(or only part of it) we could carry it over. So it really doesn't matter from that perspective if we did it this year or next.
What does happen next year is we have more leverage (threatening a very unlikely cut or dangling more guaranteed money next year). If we redid him this year any signing bonus would also be on this year's cap and without an extension it wouldn't be cost effective.
But next year it has to be an extension as a simple restructure is not possible.
Now there is also the fact that Brees is getting older and, while still playing at a very high level, has been on a slight downward slope. If we extend him this year we are locked into him good or bad for the next 3-4 years. Waiting a year gives us roster flexibility as far as what we can do at the position.
And following that we could very well just let him play the deal out and figure it out in 2017.
So it's not really about saving more this year as we have options that could save the same regardless. It's more about gaining leverage and keeping options open.
But you are right in that the Saints are the ones deciding to wait. And that could also put the fear of injury and no further payday in Brees' head. That is very good leverage to have. It's why players hate the franchise tag.
