I've had neck and back spasms since 18. I'm 29 now.
One thing I've learned is immediately after the spasm isn't good for it as it causes it to inflame. what does the trick for me is rest, ice and anti-inflammatories for the first 12-24 hours. After that more rest and heat for a day or two.
Then I'll slowly work into some static and dynamic stretching and cardio til I'm back to 100%.
As others have said STRETCH. I have become very disciplined with my stretching, back and core strengthening. Prevention is key.

Well I got them at almost 30, and at 32 haven't had them since. I'd never felt so helpless in my life (outside of a ruptured Achilles tendon).
