If so, how much on average? I read an article where people are bitching because their 8k refund is being held up for various reasons and the description of their situation made it seem like they were dependent on welfare. How do you get back 150% more than you pay in taxes?
A combination of the earned income credit and various other refundable/non-refundable credits.
Honestly, you have to be in terrible financial shape to be getting most of these credits, and outside of extreme examples, it's not exactly propping up a lifestyle of glitz and glam.

It's almost as if it would be best to stop working in October and drop to a lower bracket so I can get back taxes. May even come out better that way...

It makes me want to punt their dogs and kids off a bridge...

No, no you wouldn't.
Progressive tax rates come into effect.

Anybody know how much in food stamps these people get on average?

Depends on the state. I did a report on this a few years ago and over half the states in the US pay more in govt handouts than a minimum wage job.

Many claim to have 8-10 children when they really only have 1 or 2. Co-worker use to do this. They are betting they never get audited.
Actually too stupid to worry about being audited.

Illegal aliens are getting the benefits that the lazy populace of this country are currently getting. Between the illegals benefiting from their drug trade and not reporting their real income, they get welfare benefits. The employers of the illegals pay them under the table because they can pay them below the minimum wage. We wouldn't have a problem with illegals if business' wouldn't hire them.

You have to report SSN with every single dependent claimed.

A woman with two kids can earn up to $43,038 with 3 kids $46,227, and get the Earned Income Tax Credit.
If married filing jointly with 3 or more kids is over 50K. You can claim the children until the age of 24 if they are in college.

People report kids that aren't theirs and use each other's kids socials. Not saying this is THAT common but it happens. And not saying they never get caught, I'm sure they do.

For what it's worth, the uber wealthy by far pays for most of the personal taxes in this country, not that I agree with that.

Trust me, the IRS knows. I don't work for them or anything, but it's way too easy to keep records of that stuff.
