What better way to slap charges on someone running drugs, possibly felons, who you can't get drug charges to stick to than finding them potentially buying a firearm illegaly.

Obviously scanning god knows how many license plates at god knows how many gun shows to look for a handful of people would be a pretty inefficient use of resources and is kind of dumb when you think it through. And, wow, what do you know, they never did it.

Maybe go somewhere that you can find actual drug dealers and felons? There is no reason to believe that there is more criminal activity at a gun show than any other place. In fact, background checks are constantly being run on the participants buying firearms.
The fact that the proposal was not carried out just confirms how misguided it was. In fifteen years when the person who proposed it has moved up the chain of command, it may get approved.
