I agree with you gfunk. The one thing that they didn't tell you is that it cost about 2 million as well to travel the team, band, and it's entourage. So that's only a net income of about 2 million. It makes no sense to travel and impact someone else's economy (Houston or Dallas) when it's the state of Louisiana and mainly the Baton Rouge business that support LSU athletics.
$2 million to bring the team and band to Dallas? If the flights were $500 for 1st class tickets you could fly 4,000 people to the game.
If you are counting expenses it cost a whole lot more to have a home game than to travel.

You can't have it both ways. Let's say LSU could magically create a schedule that played 1 or 2 of the best teams from the other Power 5 conferences every year. We'd always have only 7 home games because we'd always be returning a trip to the Okalhomas, Florida States, UCLA's of the world. You can't get top flight teams to come play in Baton Rouge without going back to their place. It just doesn't happen.
That's why the neutral site games are such a big hit with all the schools. They get to play the tougher matchups without having to guarantee a return anywhere.
Someone finally gets it.

ust wait till Jindal gets his way and then Athletics will be forced by public outcry to give 14M/year to academics instead of the 7.5M now.
I thought it gave $15 mil in 2013.

I don't agree. If you do what the sec requires, 1 power 5. Then some years you have 8 games and some 7.
It would still leave you with 3 cupcake games, but we are doing that anyway with a neutral game. Like this year, having wisky at home instead of in Houston would have been a huge boost to baton rouge economy that weekend. There really isn't an argument.

Except When LSU has to travel to Wisky to return the trip, LSU gets 500,000 instead of 4,000,000 leaving a gaping hole in the Athletic budget that year. SO yes there really is an argument.

That's not really what they are replacing. We play 3 cupcakes in 2015 and 3 cupcakes in 2016 at home. We have one OOC game on the road against Syracuse in 2015, and the next year against Wisconsin on neutral site (yet in Wisconsin).
So for at least the next two years, all you are getting is 6 cupcakes at LSU, and two OOC games, one in Wisconsin, and one in New York. As trips those sound great, but still...

Uh, no. Even if you take 200 people to an away game and estimate $1000 per person, that adds up to $200k.
Your $2 million estimate is only off by a factor of 10.

The state flagship university is so poorly funded that it's laughable, and every year there are more and more cuts to the higher education budget.
I know this isn't the politics board but unfortunately there are only a few areas which can be cut due to HORRIBLE POLITICIANS who preceded the last several governors. The state constitution needs to be changed and a lot of former political favors need to end.

There is no fricking way it costs $2 Million to send the team and staff/band to Dallas or Houston.

Full band, color guard, Golden Girls, and associated directors, coaches, etc - Lets say conservatively 400 people.
Travel roster, coaching staff, trainers, equipment managers, etc - 100 people?
That's 500 people at $4000 a piece to reach $2 million in expenses.
I'd be surprised if the band/Golden Girls flew to Houston. Hell, the team may not have even flown.

unfortunately, one must consider other teams schedules when hunting the National Championship.
You need look no further that TOSU and Bama to an extent to see the path to the CG is one of least resistance.
And that is a fact

The value of having season tickets is being diminished. It was okay to have an occasional neutral site game but now it's EVERY season.
In addition to my season ticket price, I also pay a TAF fee, and usually donate an additional amount. When I quit buying tickets I'll also end the practice of additional donations.
It's getting close to that time for me as it's no longer a big deal to have season tickets. Go play all the OOC games at neutral sites. In fact, play a two for one. Play two in Houston, Dallas, etc. and make people purchase tickets as a combo deal. Let's see how well that goes over.

Love neutral games against big names. Looks good nationally

You'd rather play a tougher opponent and reduce the home schedule by one game in order to play a neutral site game that yields a financially neutral result in the name of marketing and branding? Something doesn't seem to make sense. It's not just recruiting and marketing that compels us to make a decision that's revenue neutral. Is LSU not telling us the truth about what its pulling it for home games anymore? Also, like it or not but the local economy is impacted by a smaller home slate. I just don't understand how they can ask everyone from Season Ticket holders to suite owners to pay the same money-if not more-for less of a product. It's a defacto method of increasing ticket prices and lowering their own overhead when they hold a home game. Just a fleecing by another means.
The fact of the matter is that LSU is a business and should be run as such.
If LSU did not schedule these neutral site games, do you think the price of attending LSU sporting events would be the same as it is now?
