Beard growing/grooming?

You youngsters are all growing them. And have been for a few years now. I am 41 and have had a goatee and mustache for years. Well now after 41 years I got a beard.
Your thoughts or tips on grooming? When to groom? Good links to advice, videos, blogs? My beard grows fully but is a bit too wooly for my liking. Beard oil? Beard balm? Beard wax?

Shave your neck and upper cheeks everyday.
Invest in an electric trimmer to control length.
A well groomed beard requires some work but the ladies like it.

Get a trimmer, It's all you really need. They usually come with variable sized attachments. I shave my neck every day, trim beard once or twice a week.

I remember Nick Offerman (plays Ron Swanson) did a reddit AMA during the time he had a full beard, and people asked him what products he used in his beard balm, wax, or oil he would suggest. His response was that he had never heard of any of these things they were referring to.

I do both of these things. My main issue now is the wooly-ness of the beard. Face has a lot of stragglers. Meaning a few stick straight out. I run the trimmer over these.

Beard oil is for relaxing/conditioning.
Waxes are for shaping.
Balms are in between.
I prefer balms, they last longer. I found I go through a bottle of beard oil rather quickly. Though I have a larger beard. 8.5 months worth.
Personally I trim the edges about every 1 to 2 months depending on how it looks, to get scraggly ends off to keep it neat and that's it. Then again I am growing for length right now.
Edit: it's fine to use trimmers to trim, just make sure you have a white or bright colored area behind you when you do it. Makes it easier to see what you are doing. This way there is no accidental beard gouging.

Wash it with baby soap -- no lie.

Just don't shave. Ever. It's that simple.

Pretty much. I haven't put a razor to my face in about 6 years. I just trim it up with scissors.

Buy a small pair of scissors and trim the stragglers individually.

This. I keep it off of my neck and upper cheeks with regular shaving and I use the trimmer about twice a week.

I've been sporting a beard for three years. Had a Norelco trimmer that didn't last. Love the Wahl trimmer. Use it once a week or for special occasions. Same with saving the neck.

Can never seem to get a consistent trim using trimmers--too much in areas and not enough in others. I like the shadow look, and it looks good while growing in, but I invariably wind up having to shave it as it grows out more.
