what kind of pipes do y'all have?
Have a Peterson with the p-lip and it is my least favorite. I really don't like the p-lip. I find it burns my palate.
I have two Nordings which I really like and an Edwards "bulldog" 720-L which my father passed down to me.

Really? I kind of thought it would burn your pallete with the smoke being directed at the roof.
Probably gonna stick with the fish tail when I grab a Peterson.

Yeah that's the thing with the P-lip, if you smoke to fast you can burn out your palate like biting into a super hot slice of pizza. You gotta take it slow with the p-lip and smoke easy.
With the XL90 you should be able to get about 40-45 minutes out of it smoking at a normal rate. My really large Ser Jacopo that my wife gave me can easily do 75 minutes or so. The normal sized Petersons and Savinellis would give you 30-35 minutes with the small Petersons good for 20 minutes+.
That said I've done some pipe smoking competitions where you win by smoking the longest without relights, everyone getting the same amount of tobacco. There I've used a normal/medium sized Peterson and have gone about 65 minutes on one bowl, but there you are basically smoking so slowly that you are constantly of the verge of the pipe going out. That is tough and not really enjoyable.
As for fills they are little pockets in the briar formed by the briar growing around a piece of sand/stone. Basically it is a small pit in the briar that is filled with putty. The high end guys like Dunhill toss the briar if they find pits after carving. On the less expensive pipes they just fill the pits with putty. When the pipe is new the putty blends in nicely and is sometimes difficult to spot. But after you smoke them for a while the wood will change color a little maybe from the oils on your hand or the heat but the putty stays the same initial color, stands out like a sore thumb and looks bad. They are normally small maybe 1 to 2 mm in diameter. But sometimes they are bigger and some bad pipes will have 3 or 4 fills, some big.
On Dunhills, Ser Jacopos, etc. you really don't find any. On standard Petersons and Savinellis you will find some fills, not on every pipe but like 60-70%.

Solid post .
I had to learn it's all about the draw to get a cool, sweet smoke. Basically you have to draw as slow as you can. When I had a Cobb coming from cigs, I would huff the shite out of it and the tobacco would smoke hot. It took a little while to get the right cadence. Once I had it down it was great way to relax and could see why everyone loved the hobby.
Any beginners I would skip the cob and go to a cheap basket pipe.
Anyone smoking tonight?

What's the best site for buying tobacco online?
Check out Thompson's Cigars on-line.
Wish we still had the Tinder Box store chain. They were tops.

This thread talked me into it. Didn't feel like the usual 2-3 hour cigar movie night so stepped out for some pipe with my special Tinder Box blend. And a couple fingers of Crown.
ETA: Pipe is a Ben Wade vintage from the 80s, courtesy of Dad. Looks like this LINK I actually didn't know how nice of a pipe it was until I looked it up just now.

I have a Peterson Aran 87
I've got some old merchams, couple old no name briars and couple corn pipes. Enjoy it particularly on my boat
Probably smoke a bowl a month, unless I am on the boat

Dude, I had no idea and didn't even bother checking bc I assumed it was just okay, nothing great.
It's the Royal Grain line, handmade in Denmark. The old man, you never knew what he would go apeshit on spending money on.
It's weird because you know I love (love) cigars, and may not touch the pipe for months at a time, but when I get on board... man it's utterly relaxing more so than the stogies.
