So, I'm looking to get a dog in a few months

House will be done around end of April and will want to get a puppy. I've never had my own dog. Here's what I'm looking for:
1) something that will be my boys best friend and die for him
2) a good woods dog that will follow him around and hold his own with other dogs
3) a dog that will eat a burglars face off
4) a dog that is smart enough to know when to be chill. Like when friends come over, he knows I'm ok, so he's ok.
5) an all around great family dog
6) I don't think i can get this with the above, but if he could also retrieve ducks, that'd be great.
Basically I really want a good smart, guard, family dog. Not sure if anything exists like that.

Low maintenance also, don't get a dog with long hair that requires grooming...

GSP, Lab, Doberman (not for ducks),

Yeah, I don't want to be sweeping up a pound of dog hair daily.

lab would be good except the hair

What kind of area will said dog have to roam? We talking a fenced yard or 10 open acres in the middle of family land?

Sounds like you need a good ol Labrador

They are a pain as far as grooming goes but Great Pyrenees are really a great breed. We have one that we rescued that is mixed with a lab and we love it. They will also play a little fetch but I doubt you could train it to retrieve birds. More just a fun back yard pet for your kids.

FWIW I would have said a Lab until I saw you want something that is loving and protective. Labs aren't usually the most vicious of breeds even though I have seen one or two crazy ones.

We have an English GOlden Retreiver that is an awesome dog, but as far as burglers go, she would probably bounce right up to one...

Standard schnauzer, giant schnauzer, poodle, anything mixed with a poodle

My two labs will let me know is there are strangers in my yard. And even if I go somewhere different, once we are there, they will bark at strangers. Great with kids, but there is that hair thing though. Their worth trouble.

Giant Schnauzers are badass.

My lab will not let another dog get between him and my kids or wife. Also, let's me know if someone is at the door.

My SIL loves those dogs with all her heart.
Her neighbors haaaaate her.

all of this is largely dependent on how you raise/train/handle him. I'd say Lab or Golden Retriever.

My first thought. My Beagle is a great guard dog and woods dog. But that is the loudest freight train you've ever heard when company comes over.
