Pretty much this is gatlinburg. Also, you can mix in lame souvenir shops and all the while, you need to be obese.
As obese as most of the rednecks there,I'm thinking most shops and restaurants must give special discounts to fat people.

I want to do rafting, zip lining, hiking, etc. Probably wouldn't be as fun for the family in the winter.
I'm thinking last week of May.

I live 40 minutes away and have never known why you jackasses come in groves to the place.

Place is a straight up tourist trap.

I've never been in the winter...but have been 4 times in the summer and can't wait to go back again. It's a great family vacation depending on where you stay and what you do. Dollywood is a first class amusement park with some great rides and lots of entertaining shows. Tuskaleechee Caverns is fantastic if you haven't been there before. Pancake Pantry for breakfast at least once while in Gatlinburg. And the trails. That's the best thing going. The Alum Cave Bluffs trail is the best....but can be a ballbuster (about 7-8 hours to the top and back, assuming you are in reasonably decent shape...about 11 miles round-trip). The Chimney Tops trail is much shorter (maybe 4 miles roundtrip) but fairly steep and quite a work-out.

Downtown Gatlinburg can be pretty cheesy....but probably worth at least one visit. Don't expect any great dining experiences....but a decent meal can be had.

Have always stayed in some pretty nice cabins. Rented on-line and never disappointed. Timber Tops Cabin Rentals would be my choice again when we return for our next visit.

Go and have fun...and don't pay too much attention to the Gatlinburg haters. It can be a really fun trip.

We usually stay at a cabin at Gatlinburg Falls or downtown at Zoders Inn overlooking the creek. I highly recommend both. I've only been up there in the winter and it's f'n beautiful, IMO. I love it there.

We went to Chattanooga first, Asheville then gatlinburg. Gatlinburg is tourist trap city. A city with fifty pancake places? Cherokee was depressing! Indian bums playing banjos! Honestly 2-3 days in that area is max. Pigeon forge is all ripley's junk and shows, all costing bank! Best thing was to just walk the wooded area between gatlinburg and pigeon forge, have a running trail, creek. Was a cool break! Ober gatlinburg really sucked, except for the sled ride. Liked Chattanooga a lot more! We did 2 days in each place. Asheville cool, plenty micro breweries.

Great analysis. Gatlinburg-Pigeon Forge-Cherokee is one of the most depraved places in the entire country.

I remember going on a family road trip when my dad wanted to check out a "neat little Indian town" he had heard about. Needless to say we were shocked to find a town filled with fudge shops, pow wows, tacky Indian decorations, and casinos.

Skied Cataloochee for Thanksgiving. It was fun. Has to be a lot more snow there by now. You can ski Ober. Haven't been there in a while. In Gatlinburg be prepared to eat pancakes, pancakes, and more pancakes. They do have a moon shine distillery and a decent brewery, but take the drive to NC and ski Cataloochee. Inexpensive, and fun.

Nooga is an interesting city. We have a nice aquarium. A bunch of good restaurants. Some decent older crowd bars. Chickamauga battlefield. Good mountain bike trails. Raccoon Mountain and Lookout Mountain has some decent hiking.

I am still not a fan of the government or the planning of the city, but I have learned to like the town. Gig Internet helps. Still miss living not to far from the GSMNP outside Knoxville like I use to though.

Ate at sticky fingers bbq, was killer. Cross the bridge, not sure it's name, and other side is very magazine street. Cool shops, large park, carousel. Ate at some killer hot dog place. Children's museum, if have kids, blew ours away. Really liked the area. Clean and appeared very safe. Got that brewpub that's in Disney, the boardwalk area. Asheville was clean and safe also. Had multiple stores in a downtown area. Area had large artistic monuments on various streets. Payed some dude 5$ to play scooby do theme song on guitar, my kids were really into scooby. Sure that was a first for that dude
