Why do clubs sell their top talents?

I just got into following worldwide soccer heavily in the past year so please pardon my ignorance, but I've found myself wondering why clubs sell off players even when they go to rival clubs?
Is it just a money thing where the transfer fee is too much to pass up? I understand when the players contract is up like with Lewandowski going to Bayern from Borrussia but seeing rumors of players like Pogba and Hazard moving it just had me wondering why you'd ever sell off talents like them.

There are some clubs that stars dream to play for. You don't want to get a reputation as a club that doesn't let players to to Madrid, Barcelona, etc. Then you will miss out on a lot if young talent.

1. Everybody has a price. Even if you're not looking to shop a player, when a big offer comes that could improve your squad depth overall, you have to consider it.
2. Players have some element of control. A lot of times it's more beneficial to start an inferior player that wants to be there than an unsettled world class talent.
3. Contract issues. A team like Everton will have trouble keeping a guy like Ross Barkley because their wage bill pales in comparison to teams like City, Chelsea, United, etc.

Because contracts don't mean shite in soccer, when a player wants to go.. they get sold..
Also, some of the money offered for top talent is too much to turn down... and some clubs can't match the wages other clubs will pay

Some clubs needs to sell their talent to stay alive

most of them get sold bc countrywide leagues are relics of the old days, with a few clubs getting so big nowadays that the others can't really compete any longer

One of the worst things a soccer club can do is let one of their young stars on a free transfer. They can see the writing on the wall if the player won't sign a contract extension.

You sell them to keep the club alive. The amount of money they make of transfer market is huge for small clubs. They cannot afford the wages to sign contract extension. The lure of playing big clubs is huge for talented players. Clubs know they should do good by the players ambitions and make money while they can.
