I want to know why Melvin Gordon wasn't thought to have a chance.

He rushed for the 4th-most yards in FBS history (and still has 1 game left to break the record).

The problem with that argument is that it compares apples to oranges. Many players in FBS history played in only 10 or 11 games and bowl games didn't count. Gordon will get to play in 14. By way of example, Barry Sanders averaged 238.9 ypg in 1988.

He broke the single-game rushing record in only 3 quarters.

Unfortunately for him, that record stood precisely one week until Samaje Perine went for 427 yards in a 41-7 win over Kansas. For the record Perine, had precisely two carries in the fourth quarter of that one (he did use 9 more carries in his game, though). Say what you want, the point isn't to compare them, it just took the luster off of his accomplishment.

And his 7.6 yards per carry for his career is the most in FBS history.

Dude is a beast. The problem is that things kept nerfing his hype. Breaks the record, it falls the next week. Drags Wisconsin to prosperity, gets disciplined by Meyer.

Gordon got to 2000 in fewer carries than anyone in history.
