NAS/server build (New question in ETA 2)

Anyone have insight on building a home server. Im looking to setting up my own server but not use my big PC due to power consumption, location, and size purposes.
Should i buy a prebuild cube and add a 2-4TB HD or piece one together?
ETA 1:
I ended up buying the Synology DS214+ with 2-4TB HDDs. I plan to set it up were only parts of the drives are clones on each other(not sure of the terminology). I plan to use it for a surveillance DVR, back up of my desktop where i do video and image editing, and a place to store torrents.
I have read the DS214play id better for torrents because of the better trans-coding but im not to worried about that since it isnt the main reason for the NAS.
ETA 2:
So I am trying to set my 2 drive(3TB each) NAS to where I have 1 volume (roughly 1TB) duplicated (SHR) on each drive and the rest of the space in RAID 0. Is this possible? I have tried a few different things. Do i set up the Disk group as RAID 0 then is there something to duplicate parts on each drive?
Or do i set up a volume on each drive separately and clone/mirror a folder from one drive to the other?

Which server OS you going with?

well at first thought i would guess Windows, but since i would have to buy a copy of it, i wouldnt be opposed to going the Linux, ubuntu, route if they easily talk to other computerrs with Windows OSs

What purpose do you want it to serve? If you want basically NAS +/- DHCP server control, look at FreeNAS. You can build a FreeNAS box for very cheap. The drives will be the vast majority of the cost.
Also, used rack servers are surprisingly cheap, depending on your needs.

im looking to having it set up to my network to hold data i can access from any computer as well as setting it up as an FTP i can send files to and retrieve while im on the go.

Don't most home isp's block ftp externally? I guess you can possibly do port forwarding.

QNAP NAS. Has an app that lets it function like your own private DropBox.

just from a quick search the QNAP look almost double the price of the one the other guy recommended.
So you dont need to run an ftp server like Serv u?
can it be set up to have cameras record to it?

Bump, No other input? I think there were a ton of networking/server gurus here.

I built a FreeNAS box last year that works well. Cox blocks the ports that FreeNAS uses for the cloud service, and I was never able to get the port forwarding to work correctly, so I haven't really been able to utilize that part yet.
I use it mainly as a media server for the house and Time Machine backup

Cox blocks port 21 (FTP's default port) but you can just have your router forward some random port to the IP address of the NAS at port 21, and you're good.

Cheat and set up a VPN?

I have two synology NAS devices. They are very easy to setup and use. I recommend them all the time. I basically use mine for file storage and my surveillance system but they are capable of so much more.
