Is what I read correct? Saints control destiny?

Per NOLA.com
quote:
The reason to pay close attention to the Saints is clear: They control their own destiny. Win the last three games, finish 8-8 and New Orleans wins the division. The Saints would still host a playoff game as if it was 13-3.

They are totally unpredictable. Frustrating as a fan, but at least it will keep me watching into the new year.

I mean, yeah, unless somehow the Falcons beat Green Bay.
Then the Falcons control their own destiny.
And when we lose tomorrow night, both teams will control their own destiny.

No, they don't control their own destiny.
If Saints win out they will be 8-8 & 4-2 in division. If ATL goes 3-1 w/ the 1 loss to Saints, they would be 8-8 & 5-1 in division.

Did we screw up tiebreakers today with the loss?

Yes...first tiebreaker is division record. You now have 2 losses. If we beat the Panthers and lose to you, we will only have one.

So he must have meant "at this time not taking into account the outcome of the Packers / Bears game".

Current standings:
Atlanta 5-7
New Orleans 5-8
Carolina 4-8
Tampa Bay 2-11
If both Atlanta and New Orleans win out, with the exception of New Orleans beating Atlanta when they play in the dome on 12/21/14, then both teams will finish 8-8.
First tiebreaker is head-to-head, in which case they are 1-1 this year.
Second tiebreaker is won-lost-tied percentage in games played within division.
Atlanta is 4-0 within the division, if they lose to the Saints and beat Carolina then they'll be 5-1. If the Saints win out, they'll be 4-2 within the divison.
So we need the Falcons to drop a game, AND we need to win out.

No, he meant what he said. The writers at NOLA are terrible and routinely get their "facts" incorrect.

He is correct because he knows they already lost to Green Bay tomorrow night.

Sure, but it is essentially true given that literally nobody expects Atlanta to beat Green Bay tomorrow night.
It's a damn shame someone from the South will make the playoffs this year though. It's absurd that NO, Carolina or Atlanta will get in over one of Dallas, Philadelphia, Seattle, Detroit or Arizona. I'd be willing to bet an over-.500 rule will be implemented in the next few years. If a team is 8-8 or worse, even if they lead their division, they fall into the wildcard pool.
