St. Jude's Memphis Marathon Weekend

St. Jude's is AMAZING ... my first visit to Memphis and so glad I did the hospital tour. Absolutely incredible .. made me so very thankful that my 3 children haven't needed their services BUT I'm so glad that it's there for those who have. Not one St. Jude patient is ever billed for anything ... NOTHING. Treatment. Housing/food/travel for families. NOTHING. All supported through donations of individuals and corporate donations as well as weekends like the one we just attended.
Was set to run the half but due to recent lack of running due to surgery, was instructed by doc and PT to do the 5k. Through mile through the campus was awesome ...
If you're in that area and have never participated, consider doing so. If you're a runner and want to do great things, participate in the weekend. You won't regret it.

My 85 year old grandpa used to do that marathon every year and has a bunch of trophies for being so old and fast

That's awesome ... I'm not old and I'm not fast. But this momma sure got teary eyed when I saw St. Jude's kids and their families cheering along the route through campus. First class organization and a first class event.

91, good for you. Things like this are good for the soul.

Ran it for the first time this year and it will be an annual trip for us. The girlfriend was in tears during the tour and she shed a few during the run.

Iona, it WAS good for the soul. I sadly cried Friday night not being able to run what I signed up to run. But a friend reminded me the distance didn't mean squat -- it was the intention that meant everything.
JOJO, did yall go to the pasta dinner? If not, it was humbling to walk into the room to clapping and cheering and "thank you" from a line of people. I was NOT prepared for that and I had tears in my eyes -- even at mass this am they asked visitors who were there for the Marathon Weekend to stand. I was in tears again as the priest said THANK YOU and they were clapping.
I knew it was a big deal but I had no idea how much it really meant to the people of Memphis that the runners came and ran and donated and raised money.
AMAZING all the way around -- the Captain for our team wants to have a marathon relay next year as the team's never participated in that. I'm all in as long as it works with my kids schedules again.

You're a good egg, 91.

They also rent super hero and sesame street costumes and have people go visit the kids. Not sure how many times a year they do it, but I know it's at least a couple.
Pretty amazing what a few hours of your time can do for someone.

My almost 14 yo dtr (yeah, um no pics) just said she wants to "just go and hang out and be bffs with them for a while ... can I do that??".
IDK ... maybe I should find out.

Good on you, 91. Had a friend go up there to do the half, heard more good stories from them. I plan to try and make it next year.

I'd really like to see that place and take the tour
I've thought about what it would be like to work there

St. Jude's is my charity on smile.amazon.com. Such a good place.

I have a family member who works there. Says he thought is would be tough when he first took the job, but it isnt. He absolutely loves it, and is the most rewarding work he has ever done.

Volt, the tour was awesome. A super HAPPY place. The fact that they have employees from 100 countries to me is amazing. The fact that children who go to and are treated by St. Jude's grow up and go back to work there is amazing.
I'm not gonna say it doesn't have depressing moments as I'm sure it does BUT you sure don't get that impression walking through it.

We did the tour and fundraiser last year. I expected it to be sad, but it is a very upbeat place for the most part. Their research and treatment directly impacts so many lives. That's one of the very best charities IMO

St. Judes is incredible with what they are doing for kids and their families. My daughter is currently a patient there and is doing great. Almost all of St Judes budget comes from donations.

The wife and I will be running this next year. It's a great race for a great purpose.

St.Judes is the one donation I make every month and never regret or doubt. Don't know if I could handle a tour tho. The commercials kill me every time I see them.
