or government...in places like south central los angeles, Birmingham, Baltimore, etc.
who do you think is in charge?
jesus Christ, NO. The only reason I benefited from being white is that I'm not black...that's the reality that can't be talked about
white privilege is not having some crazy lunatic female raising you by herself (I was raised by a single mother, oh the horror)going on wild harangues, beating you, not working, not caring, etc.
that's what white privilege is...it means you are more likely to be born into a family that values education, hard work and quite frankly is a little more on the up and up when it comes to behavior and emotional intelligence.
environment, but when it is a group that thinks and behaves homogenously it is mistakenly viewed as either racial inferiority, or racial discrimination
it's all bullshite, you've been had dummy.

You aren't helping the cause, tbh.

You are angry, bitter and ignorant. Lost cause.

sweet baby Jesus. you are clueless
i suppose all those white people living in the trailer parks of Livingston Parish are breathing that sweet sweet air of privilege as well.

Damn white people breathing all that white air

I can tell when someone doesn't have anything to compete with what I'm saying, they would probably say something like this...
but a little self reflection never hurts
angry - only when the saints lose
bitter - about what?
ignorant - ok
there's a lot to choose from, you chose poorly

honestly, I think my personality would've been better suited for some Asian privilege, I want some of that, or jewish privilege
white privilege means "not black privilege"
but when you acknowledge that multiple groups are getting along well, then it kind of pokes a hole in your story that whitey has targeted you...why not the rest?

White people on this board can't even admit that they benefited from being white. In fact, many of them literally believe they were harmed because of it.
Please explain to me how I benefitted from being white?
I grew up sharing a room in a small apt with 2 brothers. I had all my physical needs met, but never had anything I wanted. My parents lived check to check and went through bankruptcy. Somehow, I worked my arse off and got a scholarship for college and earned my degree. This allows me to provide a much better life for my children. I refuse to believe any of that is because I was born white.

I appreciate your opinions and thoughts. But your apathy is a indirect reason for people's frustrations and sad events like fergurson. I'm afraid that oeople like you will only start to care when it gets shoved in your face, when it happens through your kids, or when you're forced to deal with it.
Posted on 11/25/14 at 3:49 pm to Homesick Tiger
Stop pining your tax hate on poor black and brown people. Our govt wastes it on a lot more other things that should tick you off.

When it comes to race, apathy should be the goal of everyone.

quote:I've been a victim of crime...the problem is, there isn't a free marketplace of ideas
oeople like you will only start to care when it gets shoved in your face
it's not apathy, I would love to give my ideas...however, what I just posted earlier...is immediately rejected and rebuked as racist...so there's a huge wall up...I used to get so pissed off because I didn't know if it was my phrasing of things, my different thought processes (I have aspergers and this is a source of frustration for people with it, communicating effectively...or differently)but in the end, no one wants to hear it, and I would get so pissed at that girl because she was in one of the few places in NOLA that was white as the driven snow, and she didn't know any black people, she'd never lived with black people, etc...
the apathy is a two way street however, because let's be honest...they're only marching because Wilson isn't black.
it's tough, I think it's a shame, I think it's a construct that can be torn down, but there's that oh so magic barrier up..."racism" and everything shuts down when it is said
years and years before I was beaten into apathy. And I'm happier for it...apathy from the garden district crowd and apathy from the black community...over the same thing...neither of them care about blacks killing blacks
the two diverge when it comes to white people killing black people though, as you see in ferguson
I'm not apathetic, I've submitted...best anyone can do is hope for personal responsibility, more government isn't the answer, it will only exacerbate the problem, more finger pointing from the black community won't do anything
and eliminating ideas from the market place is the WORST thing, and it is because jobs are lost, lives are ruined when that word drops
"racism"

quote:
I can tell you why we sometimes see ourselves as black first:
Due to age old and systematic bouts with local, state, and institutional racism, various aspects of our lives were first regulated to our "black" blood. Look at the classifications slave masters made for mixed people's "quad-roon", "mulatto" etc. Look at the 3/5th compromise, Dred Scott's case, the fight against abolition, the civil war, etc.
All of those horrible events were seemingly passed on through our color to future generations that had to deal with tangible incidents of oppression.
Yet we have boards like this that do not thing that the sins our country have a had any sort of pandemic effect on that group. Some members of that group thinks it's damn obvious and they get upset when they see things like this event happen. It's like reliving emit till for some folks (in not drawing that comparison myself).
Old
Age white supremacy and terrorism humiliated and embarassed the humanity of a group for centuries, leaving long lasting residual effects and to some it sometimes looks like the strives we have made have been disingenuous because of all the back pedals we take and all of the lingering racial fears and bias.
This board never asks itself what it can do better to help mend this Divide. They pin it on the backs of the historically oppressed group. From an historical standpoint, they never ask themselves what they can do as a group to help mend it.
It's short-sighted and ignorant of our history, and if we want to bridge the gap, the historical monarchs in this case are gonna have to make serious strides on inter-relational standpoint to help bridge this gap
Thanks for the post. Additional perspective is useful.

But there is an incredible devaluation of personal responsibility in equations involving Brown/Ferguson, or Trayvon Martin, or Crystal Gail Mangum. Most people see that. They recognize it for what it is, and they are appalled.
They may not distill disgust to its accurate cause, but they viscerally know something is very wrong, and it is.
