Always include the innocent in any roundup of wrongdoers. It can all be sorted out later to some degree or another. Its an absurd overreaction.
I'd say it's more of a statement than it is a practical step. It's very important to do something, practical or not.

It's not an isolated case. Apparently it's been a pretty big problem at UVA for a while now.

I'm curious as to why a story about one rape gets the ENTIRE fraternity system at UVA suspended instead of specific chapters.
It comes off as the old NCAA joke "They are so upset at Kentucky that they gave Cleveland State 5 more years of probation."
At my school, five Kappa Sigs got arrested and suspended by the school over an investigation that didn't go to trial.
Their chapter got suspended while the school investigated but they didn't shut everyone else down with them.

It still makes no sense. I know it's brief, but stopping all fraternity activities for allegations against one entity? It's beyond ridiculous.
If the entire fraternity system is at fault, what does this say about educational institutions in general?

Whacky world we live in, eh? Back in the day, if you filmed yourself having sex, you were borderline perv. Thesedays if a college kid records sex acts on his cell phone, he may have valid legal reasons for doing so.

Because it isn't about one rape or one fraternity. This has been a wide spread problem at this university. Another poster shared a link confirming as much.
If you had read the RS article (which I recommend), you would know that.
In the end, the fraternity system should and will be abolished at more prestigious universities.

Have you bozos even read the article. Even if only 10 percent of the women at Virgina are telling the truth. It is CLEAR that the rape culture there was supported by one or more of the fraternities. The main story was so appalling it took me a couple of times to get through because I couldn't digest what animals these frat rats were.
And I say this as a frat rat.
If they only shut down the greek system at Virginia, those low-lifes will have gotten off easy.

Disagree. There is clearly such a culture at SOME fraternities at SOME universities. The now-defunct Tulane Pikes are a good example. The responsible organizations should be shut down.
War on Women is a buzzword. Liberals usually use it when someone has the audacity to suggest that someone grown up enough to have sex is also grown up enough to take responsibility for it instead of sticking society with the tab.

Because greeks are easy scapegoats as far as university regulations, despite the fact that in many cases they can often represent the best of the student body.

Has no impact on the fact that the greek system as a whole has not been implemented, and moreover, no evidence supports punishing the system at large.

UVA has a veneer of civility but is quite wild underneath. That's what I recall from my post grad studies on that campus*.
* They call it "the grounds" instead of "campus" for some reason related to Tommy Jefferson.

I work in higher ed administration - this is a hot topic across the nation.
West Virginia suspended all Greeks for the rest of the year, now UVA. Here's the underlying reason.
Jackpot Justice. Little Johnny or Susie is going off to college, getting hazed, getting too drunk, or something way less serious than a culture of rape depicted here. Universities are settling left and right. Insurance rates are getting out of hands. I've sat in meetings at a smallish Southern university in the last month where suspension of all Greek activities is being considered.

They are pausing all fraternities during the holidays no big deal. I will say that my frat Kappa Sigma started at Virginia and I believe the national HQ is there. A lot of money to be tangling with.
Also this is another scenario where something bad probably happened, then people regretting the decisions they made start coming out of the wood work as "victims".

The Rolling Stone article is a sensational piece of reporting that plays fast and loose with the facts. The culture of rape that Ms. Erdley would have you buy into doesn't exist. The handful of insistences she points to are certainly deplorable, but they hardly constitute a crime wave. If the national states are any guide, rape is uncommon and growing rarer.
Like everyone here at UVa I'm looking forward to seeing the results of the police investigation - and finding out what happened that night - but I would caution against buying into more Erdleys dramatic claims. She is a tabloid journalist and she is in the business of page views.
Her condemnations of the University are worth mentioning as well. Dean Groves and Dean Eramo are both well loved figures. Suggesting that they would suppress attacks to protect the university is absurd, and it displays Erdley's ignorance of the law. The University is bound by title IX and due process.
Finally, I do not believe Phi Psi was conducting gang rapes as part of an pledging process. They do not have have fall pledging, and they rely almost entirely on formal rush to recruit new brothers. I would chalk that up to fallibility of eyewitness testimony, and the unreliability of memory - especially after so much time, and under such traumatic circumstances.

Ive talked to many UVA grads and currents students.. The fraternities needed to be shut down, not just this one. A few of them were completely out of control
