Stolen from OT: No chemical weapons in Iraq, except for the ones ISIS just used

The Islamic State group used chlorine gas against Iraqi police officers in what appears to be the first confirmed use of chemical weapons by the militants, according to a Washington Post report.
The attack on 11 Iraqi police occurred Sept. 15, about 50 miles north of Baghdad, according to an Iraqi defense ministry official cited by the Post.
The Iraqi police had been guarding a town under heavy assault for days when they saw IS fighters retreat from their position, according to the report. They heard a boom, then saw yellow smoke drift toward them.
The four doctors who later treated them said there was no question that they were attacked with chlorine gas, the Post reported. The police officers were rushed to a hospital in Balad, where they vomited and struggled to stand, according to the report.
Iraq officials said two other crude chlorine gas attacks have occurred, though few details exist, the Post reported.
The reports have raised fears that Islamic State is developing its abilities to deploy chemical weapons as it wages war in Iraq, according to the story. The militants have a former Iraqi chemical weapons factory within their captured territory, though officials said that the 2,500 weapons there are likely unfit for use and were sealed in a bunker more than 20 years ago.
Chlorine gas was widely used during World War I and was responsible for killing thousands of soldiers. It is banned under the Chemical Weapons Convention, which nearly all nations have either acceded to or ratified.

Bush's case was based on Iraq's ongoing manufacturing of WMDs. Remember Colin Powells lecture on mobile trucks, etc.? This is also germans - it came out a couple of weeks ago.

Am I the only one that thinks a great deal of Saddam's chemical weapons were moved to Syria after he knew we were coming after him?
It's highly plausible that these were later re-captured by the ISIS thugs in Syria to play around with later.

The fact that you said this regarding a story of a chlorine gas attack made me giggle.

So I guess we have an excuse to invade any country with Chlorine supplies under the guise of WMD's? All those ruthless dictators out there with swimming pools and cleaning products.
Although I do seem to recall someone in the Bush administration trying to drum up support for the war in Iraq based on the fact that their hospitals had cleaning supplies and medical equipment. Wasn't that some pathetic ambassador or something?

What difference at this point does it make? WNDs don't count unless they were made after 1991. Saddam had no plans for the 500 tons of yellowcake, and the aluminum tubes the wingnuts claimed were meant for centrifuges. The bunkers full of RDX and HMX were for conventional use only, and besides, the explosive lenses used for implosion type weapons were already degraded. Right libs?
Since we've got a Dem prez, I suppose Iraqi WNDs are a problem again, just like in the late 90s where all prominent Dem leaders solemnly intoned about the impending danger awaiting civilization. The only way to shut them up would be to elect a Repub prez, and then all the WNDs will go away once again.

We went to war over this?

So on the eve of invasion, when the entire world knew what was about to happen, Saddam sent his weapons of mass destruction to another country? You think he thought once we invaded and found none we'd just tell him "never mind" and let him go about his business?

Wow, are you really that fricking stupid that you don't know the difference between chlorine for a pool, and chlorine used as a weapon?

No, you're not the only one. I thought it was common knowledge that the WMDs were moved to Syria.

Sent some out of country, some were picked up by foreign parties, some were dumped at sea, and the rest were stored by a govt agency that looks about as competent as the ACA rollout.

And all this was going on when we had 200,000 troops on their border, our navy off their coast and our Air Force flying over their country enforcing the no fly zones (not to mention on satellites) and we didn't see any of this?

Ongoing, everybody. Ongoing. You can't kill people by the thousands unless you're program is ongoing.
Yeah, I don't remember the emphasis on the program being ongoing, but the weak semantic argument, though invalid, is what I've come to expect from the left.
What son of arlo said.

Being fairly new around here I actually thought you may be one of the more intelligent points of view from across the aisle. Boy have I never been so wrong. Surely to God you're not that naïve.

We did see most of it. We had all the phone switches wiretapped. We heard all the 2AM phone conversations about cleaning up sites. That's why it made no sense when we didn't get any reports about WMDs in Iraq.

Actually that is not that crazy. Saddam sent his airforce to Iran during the Gulf War to keep it from being destroyed. It is very plausible that Saddam knew that his military couldn't stand up to the Americans. So he sends some of his WMD to Syria is exchange for asylum. Assad then gets the WMD and goes back on his word and doesn't let Saddam in and he is stuck hiding in a hole.
