Last week our strengths were UK weakness, and vice versa ... This week, Ole Miss has an outstanding rush defense and strong inside running game. Hope we try something different.

The new term on the rant is "offensive philosophy." Please, someone explain what LSU's "offensive philosophy" is and don't use laymen's turns...use technical jargon.

No. This is going to be just like Miss State except Freeze won't take his foot off the gas. Ole Miss 45, LSU 17.

So you think LSU will get 17? Hmmm.

You think we are as bad as ULL and Vandy? Ole Miss has only hit the 40 pt mark against those two.
Posted on 10/20/14 at 10:16 am to hondo
Nope. Run, run, run, punt, and play defense only works against bad teams and when you have a great defense.
Gonna have to open things up when we play against better teams. Not saying we have to go air raid vs Ole miss, but at least have to make them respect the pass.

Yes, we can. We match up pretty well against Ole Miss, IMO. They can't take advantage against our soft, but improving, interior DL. They have only faced one rushing attack with a pulse, and Alabama put up 160+ yards against them. Had Alabama played conservative football, they beat Ole Miss on the ground and end up with over 200+ yards rushing.
Ole Miss is living a dream right now. They will be humbled by State and Auburn and possibly LSU.

Well, Jeremy Hill was standing on the sidelines for much of the first two quarters because he fumbled on the first drive. Therefore, Ole Miss' safeties were not as concerned about Terrance Magee and played a little deeper than they would have against Jeremy Hill.
But even with that, I think the routes were open and at least two of the passes were simply underthrown.
THis is one of the things about Mile that drives me ab so lute ly batty. Sitting a RB for a fumble is stupid stupid stupid. If he keeps riding Hill in that game and doesn't bench him LSU wins. You coach the players and teach them lessons during practice not in the game. I am getting the red @ss just thinking about that game. Freakin LM.

no. OM's defense is amongst the best in the nation

WTF Other options do we have? Do people really think we should throw it all over the place and punt 17 times................
Posted on 10/20/14 at 11:02 am to redfish99
Rush for over 300 yards and score 41 points! I think that will work!

Every coach has an over arching strategic philosophical approach to football. If you have to be told or explained to what Mile's philosophy is after 9 years of watching him I pity you. But basically it's:
- run first is the best option, passing leads to turnovers (unbalanced)
- limit mistakes by the QB even if that means making him 'just another player' (not an on the field general and playmaker)
- avoid turnovers at all costs even if it means shutting down your offense and major playmakers/producers (see Jeremy Hill comment in this thread)
- rely on defense to win games, make stands late in the game to 'save it' and 'get victory'
- sit on a lead, don't attack when ahead
-win games by a close margin, point differential doesn't matter, just win (win ugly)

We will not be able to throw the ball deep unless we are running and averaging 5-6 yds a carry. If Conner isn't looked off or fooled into coming in for run support he will take any ball that is in the air over our receivers. He can flat out play football. We have to get a passing game that gets us 7-11 yds. So far this season we don't have it. It's a screen pass or a 45 yd bomb. We will not have that 45 yder against Ole Miss. They have a good Run defense so it's going to be interesting. Although I think their run d stats are a little inflated becuase of who they've played. I think we win if we conver at least 45% of our 3rd downs. We beat them down and win in the fourth quarter. 31-24 LSU

How is that working for Les?
One time I was sitting in the Superdome after a high school team just completed a 15-0 season and won the state title. I overheard a fan from that school say "I know we won the state title and all but we could have won many of our games by larger margins."
So, winning is NOT the only thing for some people.

As long as we pass only in obvious throwing situations, we will not have success throwing the ball and the run will get stuffed because it is so predictable.

I don't think a good defensive performance guarantees a win at all.
If we score 20, I think we'll win. But, I'm not confident in that.
