I guess I need to figure out how we're defining clean. Buck was a great guitarist, but he used some pretty raunchy tones.

This is another one that I have trouble seeing the "clean" part. Dude is one of the most creative guitarists ever, but he's at his best when he's twisting the shite out of the signal from his guitar.

Jimmy Page is not really what I would consider smooth.
He also had a reputation for being fairly sloppy live.

Robin Trower - my favorite tone of all the guitarists.
Yes, and if you disagree, Bridge of Sighs

David Gilmour - great tone and one of the best at bending notes, ghost bends, bend vibrato, etc.

If you were to ignore his metal passages and listen to his melodic and acoustic stuff, Mikael Akerfeldt deserves credit in the "clean" realm.

I like this. Taylor doesn't get the love he deserves.

Ive seen some good ones but Billy Gibbons before the beards back when they just stood there and killed it was as clean as you get.
Robin Trower (who is touring now)is even heavier live if that's even possible, super clean.
I saw Gary Moore and Scott Gorham when they were with Thin Lizzy and to watch them go back and forth was something special. A friend saw Thin Lizzy in Boston and Gary Moore, Scott Gorham and Snowy White were all on the stage together.

I've always thought Jerry Garcia's sound was clean.
I can hear and feel every note he's playing throughout the 70's.

quote:People mentioning tone and omitting Roy Buchanan just can't have listened to him. The sounds he got from his Telecaster, known as Nancy, without any effects to modify the signal freaked out other guitarists. LINK This is a good sample of the range of sounds he could produce with Nancy.
Roy Buchanan
