Pointless now but why was delay of game not called agnst. Fla.?

If the refs acknowledged the fact Fla. was taking their time before the kick, enough to add another ten seconds to the game clock. Why was there no flag for doing so? Isn't this delay of game by the defense?

Should have been called as a delay

I am pleased that the refs did their job and didn't allow for time to run out. However, if I interpret the rules correctly, it seems that LSU should have been awarded a 5-yard penalty.
quote:
Illegal Delay of the Game
ARTICLE 2. a. The officials shall make the ball ready for play consistently
throughout the game. The play clock will start its count-down from either 40
seconds or 25 seconds, by rule depending on circumstances. A foul for illegal
delay occurs if the play clock is at :00 before the ball is put in play (Rule 3-2-4).
b. Illegal delay also includes:
1. Deliberately advancing the ball after it is dead.
2. When a team has expended its three timeouts and commits a Rule 1-4-8,
3-3-4-e or 9-2-2-d infraction.
3. When a team is not ready to play after an intermission between periods
(other than the half), after a score, after a radio/television/team timeout
or anytime the referee orders the ball put in play (A.R. 3-4-2-I).
4. Defensive verbal tactics that disconcert offensive signals (Rule 7-1-5-a-
3).
5. Defensive actions designed to cause a false start (Rule 7-1-5-a-4).
6. Putting the ball in play before it is ready for play (Rule 4-1-4).
7. Sideline interference (Rule 9-2-5).
8. Action clearly designed to delay the officials from making the ball ready
for play (A.R. 3-4-2-II).
PENALTY—Dead-ball foul. Five yards from the succeeding spot [S7 and
S21].

should have been.....no doubt about it. LSU did exactly what they should have done in that situation.

I had flashbacks to the penn state game

Agree. Muschamp was whining like he got screwed when really they screwed us out of 5 yards.

Seems like there is only a delay from the ref looking at the clock til UF snaps the ball. Everyone else gets delay of game rt when clock hits zero.

Same here. I just knew we were going to get screwed. Any game tape showing who was laying on the ball?

It's so rarely called I think the refs wanted to give us the time but didn't want to call the penalty to avoid being killed.

SEC Blog on ESPN.com posted an article in the morning links that explained everything.
While delay of game is the primary call, the ref also has the discretion to reset the clock. It worked out for the Tigers regardless, but it could have kept them from risking a bad exchange on the spike.

That's kind of what I'm thinking. Obviously UF was slow getting up but it's so subjective. I was happy with the play clock reset. LSU needed that extra time to spike it and get the FG unit out.

If you watch the replay, you will see one of the officials signalling to stop the clock around the 10 second mark. While I think he probably should have called penalty on UF and given us the 5 yards, at least he was trying to account for the delay in some way. The adjustment back to 10 seconds wasn't arbitrary, it was about where the clock was when he was calling for it to be stopped.
Here is a nice article in a Florida paper stating not only was the time addition appropriate but that they should have also give the Tigers 5 yards.

Ref was doing next best thing. Was signaling for clock to stop, starting at about 00:10-12 seconds. Clock operator didn't stop it until 00:03. Ref put 7 back on clock and started it when ball marked ready. Delay of game, probably appropriate but a
judgment call in that situation,
would have moved LSU 5 yards closer (obviously) and might have given LSU opportunity to spot ball in the middle instead of on right hash (not sure about that rule). Ref probably did fairest thing, given that delay of game arguably wasn't clear-cut.

That's my opinion as well. A kind of split the difference call, so to speak.

I've watched the replay a few times and I really think AJ did fumble the ball when he tried to spike the ball.
I cant see how the ref's can justify putting time back on the clock if there wasn't a penalty committed by UF.

It hit the lineman I believe.

What is the rule on that? I know you can call a delay on the defense if they are not getting lined up, but does the defense have to hurry or can they take their time like they would if the offense wasn't in hurry up mode? Because with LSU hurrying to get lined up it makes the defense look slow regardless.
I am not saying we weren't deliberately slow, just wondering what the rule is and if the defense must hurry to get lined up?
