Recommendations needed for a BR area remodeling contractor

Yes I posted this on the OT but then figured Id probably get alot more responses here.
Anyway, we are considering buying a foreclosure but it needs alot of work done (Im estimating 50-75k). Does anyone have any recommendations on someone or a company youve used?
Also any recommendations on picking a contractor? Do they typically give a free estimate or is that not the norm? I know you obviously dont pick based on price but I also dont want to get raped.
Thanks for the help

Patrick Reynolds / Celtic Property. Go check AngiesList (well worth the price if you are even considering remodeling).

How old is the house? What is wrong with it? Just needs updating or real issues?

Home was built in the late 70's/early 80's. It needs to be repainted in and out, new roof, majority of windows replaced along with the trim around them, kitchen and bathrooms totally redone, a few walls knocked out or patched, back patio totally redone, etc. Theres ALOT that needs to be done.

Home is in the south br area.
And yes Im sure itll need a new ac as well. We are going to look at it tomorrow. Im just going by pics Ive seen of it and walking around the house so far. It also has a pretty big pool which Im not entirely thrilled about but the wife wants so we'll see.

What is the living area of the home? It better be in a good location...

Right at 2400sq ft. And yes its in a nice established neighborhood where the homes typically sell between 200-290

Thats who built my parents home in Briarwood back in 87. But that was also when Mr Harvey himself was building houses.

Best to take a "good" home inspector on that trip.
