I downloaded it last night and played for a couple hours just messing around with it. It plays quite smoothly for me. I didn't realize the "Ultra-HD" textures were a separate download, so I just went in and put everything to ultra settings to see how it went. I ran the benchmark and averaged 76fps with everything on ultra. Playing with everything at ultra went very smoothly (1080/60hz at the moment). The game looks "pretty" to me. I'm downloading the Ultra-HD texture pack (the one that apparently needs 6GB VRAM) just to see how it looks and runs.
This is the first RPG of this style that I have played. I've seen people comparing it to games like Arkham (which I've never played) and Assassin's Creed, which I've only played for a combined 6 hours across the series, maybe. I've played the shite out of Dark Souls 2 lately and coming from that, the combat/playstyle is completely different. Although I'm still messing around with the keyboard/mouse controls for Mordor, it seems like it is somewhat of a button masher. I didn't even know what most of my controls were going in, but I was able to kill shite pretty easily just slamming L/R mouse buttons.
I never died so I can't really comment on death penalties. But, like I said I'm coming from DS2, which has some harsh death penalties. By the same token the difficulty of DS2 is what makes me like it as much as I do. Tomorrow night I'm gonna actually sit down and get my controls laid out to see what you can really do in combat, because I'm sure that the game gets harder (I hope). But, it does seem really fun, and the combat animations are just...frickin awesome. Based on just the couple hours I would recommend it. I'm pretty picky when it comes to games because I don't have a shitload of time to play, so when I do I obviously want it to be a good one. This is the first game I've tried in a while that I can't wait for some free time to get into.
For reference I have an FX-8350 @ 4.7, R9 290 @ 1180/1475, 16GB Trident-X @ 2400.

Yes and its fun as shite. Didn't get to play long and maybe I'm just not use to the game but it seems pretty difficult too

Really enjoying it, looks gorgeous on PC.

Cutting off orc's heads is pretty fun

I take it you can create your own character? Admittedly I haven't heard much about this game.

No, but troy Baker plays your character so that's good.

I think there are different skins you can play in as well.
I was supposed to get one for my Gamestop preorder and I redeemed the code, but it didn't look like it was there

played about an hour tonight. The assassins creed/arkham elements are heavy--basically feels like a combination of the two with a LOTR spin.
I find running/maneuvering is less fluid than AC. combat reminds me of arkam, but more enjoyable for me.
So far, I have found the game to be an easy button masher. I spent most of my time mashing X and Y to fight off hoards of orcs. If there is a captain in the horde, it makes it more difficult but you can easily avoid getting hit by him thanks to the counter ability.
I literally spent 10 minutes fighting off 20+ orcs surrounding me by just mashing X with the frequent Y counter attack. I barely got touched. I havent encountered any captains that called on me to me to drastically change my strategy yet.
I'm not a fan of button mashers, but i still find the game fun. I can only play it in spurts though before I gets repetitive to me or tired thumb.

Early on it isn't very hard but from what I have read the difficulty does go up. Climbing is much better than AC, Orcs are everywhere, atmosphere of this game is great, graphics are gorgeous, and sound is great.

i only got to play through the first mission with the slaver, but holy shite was it fun. I love sneaking around, and combat took some getting used to (because I am used to the precise timing of arkham)
while nothing can beat the combat in arkham this game has one thing that's so awesome and makes things more fluid...you can use a finisher combo on grounded opponents
graphics are gorgeous, the tone is spot on, I haven't really done too much exploring. Hopefully today I can beat my wife (zing) home from work and put in a solid 45 minutes to an hour, but I usually work a little late

I don't know if it changes but it's not easy to do because orcs are everywhere.

when I did the slaver mission they're all over that gate, but moving around otherwise is easy if you use the bushes and structures. I actually became quite adept at it. The reason I had to be extra sneaky is there was a captain with 11 power who had already killed me, but there was also this other captain who calls people over and has a shitload of followers around him.
so I overdid the stealth and then found moving in between is much more manageable and fun.

You can stealth it pretty easy around, it just makes it challenging to explore.

which is great because there isn't a lot of variety in the world that I can imagine. It's not GTA and it's not arkham. Orcs really don't have a diverse lifestyle. eating, killing and slaving seems to be about the extent of it

It knows what it is which is a highly underrated aspect of games.

I also love how simple the stealth is...one button but it adapts to where you are, so you don't have to go into cover mode behind a wall, it just naturally moves that way.
I get so caught up in the frenzied fighting that I forget to use the elf shot drain. always leave that last motherfricker alive

It does the things we have wanted assassin's Creed to do for years.
Posted on 10/2/14 at 9:38 am to Mr Gardoki
the worst part about assassin's creed was how clunky everything came together. Each element on its own is really cool, but when strung together it was just sloppy execution
also, those games are sooooo boring. I don't know what goal I'm driving towards, and so many of the missions are just boring random crap.

And none of the mechanics worked well at all but they do here.
