Birmingham Weekend

I know Birmingham has been talked about and most aren't a fan of it, but I'm going and would like an opinion from those in the know. I'm trying to decide from the Sheraton Downtown or the Aloft in Soho Square. Aloft seems young and trendy but isn't downtown. Is downtown worth anything or is this Soho place cool to hang out in? I'm mainly asking about early night life, during the day we are going hiking outside the city.

Soho doesn't have a whole lot of night life besides dinner, however it really isn't very far from downtown bars either, so it won't make a huge difference. There are a lot of really good restaurants in and around Soho. If you have your own car with you, you are within 5 minutes of anything you might want to do downtown too.
ETA: You can hop on Hwy 280/31 right by Soho, and get to the restaurants by the Sheraton really quick. You won't go wrong either way.

Sheraton is ok...Birmingham lacks the top notch hotels.

Have you looked at Cobb Lane B&B?

Define top notch hotels.

SoHo is okay. There's a good restaurant there, Do Di Yos, on the corner of 28th and 18th. Also Salsarita's is decent Mexican food and they have a better beer selection than just domestic stuff, nothing high end and microbrews but more than the basics. Other than that it is an O'Carr's and Zoe's and a BBQ place.
The Sheraton is at the far end of downtown, away from the better nightlife spots. They've added an Uptown area with restaurants and bars, but other than folks going there before events at the BJCC I haven't heard anything special about it.
You may be better off staying in Southside. From there you could walk to the J Clyde and the Blue Monkey Lounge, or drive to Lakeview and to the Barking Kudu, Innisfree, or On Tap.

No it is not.

Also a Momma G's, two very good soul food/meat & 3 joints, Salem's Diner which is the best breakfast in town & amazing Philly. It is also real close to Mountain Brook village which I would recommend going to Dram/Avo or Brick & Tin

Barking Kudu
Not open anymore. New bar called Side Bar is there now.

On Tap.
Why would anyone do this to themselves? Same with Innisfree.
I would check out Paramount or Carrigan's Public House. They are great new bars.
As for downtown restaurants, go to El Barrio. Order a margarita, cheese dip with chorizo, and either the chorizo meatloaf or anything with the prime rib. You are welcome.

Birmingham is not a great "destination" city....but its pretty cool city week end and week out.
SOHO isn't far from downtown. Probably a 5 minute cab ride. The Sheraton is probably closer to a lot of the new places downtown.

Listen to this guy. He just nailed pretty much everything...except Carrigan's. Cool place but service sucks a fat one.
Salem's is a great breakfast spot. That's where Slive eats breakfast every morning.
Also check out Trim Tab and Collins Bar.

Oak Hill is a nice spot to get some beers. It's usually pretty calm in there and can get a table pretty easily. It's not far from Aloft.

Yea, I'll give you that. The service blows. I just go there because the atmosphere is generally pretty good, and It is the only place in alabama I've been able to find Elmer T. Lee

Good ones too!

Rule of thumb...if it's in Birmingham, there's a good chance the service will suck. I hate to say that, but it's true.

Nothing like waiting for a beer while watching a "mixologist" w/ blue hair take 20 minutes to make a drink because she has to light an orange peel on fire.

Eh, depends on where you go. If it is busy, sure it may take some time. Carrigan's just sucks because their staff are just assholes, and bartenders think they are the greatest things in the world because they know how to make a lot of weird drinks.
I love fricking with them and asking about what exotic drink they like to make the most, then order my bourbon on the rocks

That's the damn truth.
