"Illegal block in the back" is what you hear in the ref's call.
Is there such thing as a legal block in the back? If not, is "illegal" really needed?

Yes if it is between the tackles, and is initiated within a couple of yards from the line of scrimmage (not exactly sure of the specifics )

If a blocker is about to engage a defender square on but the defender pirouettes at the last second so the blocker hits his back, maybe that counts as a "legal" block in the back

I've seen that called as a block in the back before

Super Bowl XLIV Manning's pick
I don't know the exact reasoning behind it, maybe the pivot or cutback, but the block on Manning wasn't an illegal block in the back. WWL870 had people on explaining why days after the game.

Yeah. I'm sure it has something to do with where the ball carrier is during the block.

How would that be holding?

Think it's bc Smith has a right to his space on the field and Manning slowed/stopped.
Def been called before though

Thank god it wasn't called, otherwise the TV at the Hilton in NO would've been shattered by a beer bottle for nothing
