Heads up on a supposed Capital One text message hack going around. A few coworkers and I received it today. The link looks legitimate with Capital One logos but is indeed a scam. Goes without saying hopefully, but don't submit your social security number or account info.
You're welcome.

It's amazing that someone would just text their social to some number without checking it out. I guess that's what these people rely on

Yeah I got it a couple of times. I dont even bank with them so I knew immediately. I googled it anyway and saw the scam.

Text only? I ask because I got a very legit looking email from
Capital One today, talking about updating my security settings.

I am sure it is in both text and email forms. Call someone or email someone you are sure are with them.

The one with the text gives you a link to some random website along the lines of www.randomwebsite.com/sales/capital-one-security. When you click it you get redirected to another website that has you log in to capital one and then asks for basically every piece of information you might need. SSN, address, mothers maiden name, card PIN. You can tell its a scam because you can literally use anything for a username and password.

I don't bank with them either, but a coworker sitting next to me did it not realizing and had to start canceling.
Ironically enough her brother-in-law works in the fraud department of Capital One HQ.

Was watching CBS news where there is a scam involving the IRS where the scammers call people and threaten to jail or deport them if they don't put money into Money Pak account to pay off back taxes. Mostly old people and immigrants. Many times the caller ID says, "Internal Revenue Service," but still...

More to the point, don't follow links you get in unsolicited email, and carefully vet every link you do follow. You should only ever go to your bank through a link you've saved in your Favorites or password manager program.

To piggy back off of this, your bank will never ask you to provide your social security number or any other personal info via email or text. When in doubt, go to a local branch.
