Would quitting teaching job ruin career?

Recently moved and took a job teaching high school. It's my fourth year teaching, but this is an awful place. However, I basically committed my college education to this career. I am currently working on my doctorate, but am completely depressed with this teaching gig. I want to teach college level and do research. Would quitting this job destroy that chance ?
I have a good part-time that pays about $18k. Another decent part- time job and I'm making decent money. I just am afraid quitting would basically undo the degree I'm pursuing.

My girlfriend was in same situation last year. She was teaching at a Baton Rouge public middle school. She hated it but toughed it out and changed schools and is much happier now. Stick with it, I know it could suck, but just make it holiday to holiday and you'll survive.

man, you can do anything for 9 months...just suck it up and finish out this year...
no point in fricking up the school year for a whole class full of kids...

Maybe....maybe not. But I would try to stick it out. It never looks good bailing on a job but especially a teaching job. My wife taught in the ghetto for 5 or 6 years before getting a teaching spot at a good school. She hated teaching at the ghetto school but now is glad she did it.

I would try to stick it out to mid-year, if at all possible.

What is the underlying problem? Is it teaching high school kids, that school, that administration, or etc?
Definitely wouldn't quit right now with schools starting up, but if you are that unhappy, you should definitely pursue other options to use your teaching degree.
In the mean time- is there anything you can do to make your current situation better? Can you create a new lesson that is engaging to both you and students?

Not even a little bit. Any teaching experience is a plus for a PhD candidate. Most only have experience as a T.A.

If your school district personnel director is vindictive enough, they can have your license suspended for a year or so. At least that's how it's done in MS sometimes.

Coming to the OT for real advice is not the best idea. Although you may get 1 or 2 real answers.

BTW -- What is your field of study, and how in the world do you have time to teach high school?

The students discipline here is the worst I have ever seen. I have a good class, but the other two are filled up with so many overaged thugs I can't keep my head straight.
I was awarded at my old school with the highest test scores there my last two years. I'm afraid I not only hate this school, but that my test scores could destroy me.
To answer another question, the faculty here is great. They are working to fix the struggles, but my mindset is just not the same, warm and fuzzy thing they are implementing.
