There was an optimism that doesn't exist anymore.

Agree.
In the '80s people thought that the US was a great country getting better and that their lives were on an upward trajectory.
Today the zeitgeist is that we live in a country past its peak, going through a slow, sad decline. Average wages are DOWN something like 25% relative to 10 years ago. If you have a job, you're pretty much stuck in whatever low wage position you currently hold forever. 1/3 of the population is on some form of welfare.
I'd prefer to live in a perpetual 1980s for the optimism alone. There hasn't been good news in America for a decade.

let me just say that the 80s through the early 90s was the decade where we saw the most violent crime, abortions, teen pregnancies, and pretty much every other negative societal aspect

The 80s was a fun time, music was fun, colors were bright. Didnt have to worry about all the violence going on.
the irony is that our current time period is a rebirth of the 80s...except these days we actually don't have to worry about violence, while the 80s were the most violent decade in US history
1. bright clothes? check
2. fun music? check
3. weird fashion? check

Unless you grew up in Compton or some other similar shitty ghetto, the 80s held none of that for you. For the vast majority of us, the 80s was an awesome time to be alive.

and it's a better time today to be alive for that group of people, as well as being a much better time for more people
without question, this is the greatest point in human's time on earth, for human beings

I'd rather be back in the 80s personally
Posted on 8/31/14 at 8:52 am to yellowfin
everyone is allowed their opinion, but pretty much everyone picking the 80s is doing it based on subjective perceptions and not objective data

That's your perception while others have a totally different perception. I will note however that from reading this thread it appears the vast majority of us who actually experienced 80s say that time was vastly better than today.

Did you live through the 80s?
As for your "objective data", you're twisting it in order to get it to fit into your view. It would be like someone saying the whole of Louisiana is a shithole based on them citing the worst ghetto in NO as representative as the entire state.

If you experienced the 80's and didn't live in south side Chicago/Compton/Bronx then 80's > now.

Economically the mid 80s sucked in south la with the oil crash. Places like Morgan city were up and coming before that then lost half their population in one year.

subjective perception and cognitive biases in full display..IN REAL TIME

no i'm not
you can pick basically any set of objective data relating to negative social behavior. it's almost assuredly going to be lower today
murder is not something i "cherry picked", and neither is teen pregnancy, abortion, other violent crime, etc
you're remembering the good, and forgetting what bad you were not ignorant of (because ignorance was a lot higher back then, too)

that's actually the method that those disputing my stats are using. my data is national

The fashions of the 80s were unique, but awful.
True. But jeans (skinny jeans) made for girls with guys wearing them is OK? I laugh my arse off everytime i see a 'hipster' in them. I am thinking a hipster guy is just a new name for a queer guy. Black socks with shorts? really?

You are so invested in your view being right that you're not seeing how your bias has clouded your thought process here.
The matter of the 80s vs today is one of perspective and perception. For many it's worse today while for others it's better. You can't paint with such a broad brush like you're trying to do.

Yep my family went thru this. My dad left his family to go to California to find work because there was nothing in Louisiana in the oil industry. Lot of families suffered thru those times.

what bias? i used to think the era of my childhood was better. then i learned i was wrong. i already overcame my biases

why? you're trying to control the argument to suit YOUR biases. we can use objective data. there isn't anything wrong with that

who?

the vast, VAST majority of our population

by using statistical data?
what do you use to compare things in life, since you want to ignore objective data?
what are you basing your argument on? i need specifics. why is the 80s better/
