Is a video profile of yourself appropriate when sending resumes?

Back in the day, just the thought of including a photograph was a no-no when submitting a resume to a prospective employer. Fast forward to 2014 - with all the quick and easy technology to get it done - how would an online video profile of yourself (YouTube or Vimeo link) be perceived by the HR Department when included with a resume?

Depends on the company, IMO...
Innovative tech-related or marketing company? Sure.
75 yr old blue chip? Nah.

No to picture or video

It's better for them to suspect you are ugly than to remove all doubt.

Isn't it illegal or something for US companies to hire on the basis of physical presentation on a resume. I know it's standard for photos to be included in Europe, but read somewhere that this is a no-no in the US.

Anyone who cares will be facebook stalking you anyway. In my mind, it can only be a turnoff to those who would otherwise be disinclined.

Unless you are applying for a job where looks are important (like modeling) then no.

Typically it means the person is an idiot and I don't need to waste my time with an interview. However, I am in a different field than most and if you send a resume (not CV) longer than one page it better be for a great reason.
The only way I could see a video as a positive if I was looking for a video editor. I cannot see where a picture is acceptable other than model/actor/actress.

My résumé is 2 pages.

And you wouldn't be applying for a job that asked for a resume here
ETA: You would submit a CV

A resume by definition isn't just a page though.
It seems fairly trite to exclude candidates based on a silly arbitrary reason.
Anything above 2 pages you have a point.
I have had a resume spill a little on the second page and thought nothing little of it.

My point is that unless you tell them that you expect a one page resume, you can't expect them to know that.
There is no standard convention of resume length.

Since probably the first use of resumes, multiple pages have been a trigger point for a reviewer to go over it with a fine tooth comb and see what was so important that it required more space. Because the reviewer and the job applicant probably have two different ideas about what is important to mention in a resume it has always been taught to play it safe and limit it to one page.

If you send our HR dept anything with an outside link in it, they wouldn't/shouldn't be able to open it

I don't care what anyone says, they're the same thing. I look at both all day.

If you're not objectively stunning, I don't see the point. I suspect you aren't since you're asking this question.

I think a safe assumption is that, as a resume gets longer, the odds that any given paragraph is read gets smaller and smaller. And those odds plummet as you hit page 2.
In other words, lead with your best stuff. It's why I hate chronological resumes, because by definition the oldest stuff is the least relevant. I've seen resumes that start with "Graduated Grace King high school, 2002." Not a good idea.
